About this deal

All of these improvements, however, just serve to shine a harsher light on the limitations of Fire OS 8. Cheaper Fire tablets excuse the OS’s shortcomings by virtue of their low price, but the Fire Max 11 is encircled by a variety of much more capable rivals. The Fire Max 11’s aluminium frame feels a world away from the plastic that adorns the rest of the Fire series. Dark grey may not be the most exciting colour, granted, but the understated colourway and metal chassis make for a rather classy pairing – much more so than the Fire Max 11’s smaller stablemates. Our cases' surface shields your tablet from sharp objects and liquid spills , while also cushioning it in case of a fall to prevent breaks and scratches. Access to Alexa—Simply ask Alexa to play a song, start an Audible book, launch a trivia game, find your favorite movies, show your calendar, Drop In on a friend or family member, and more—using only your voice.

This is also the brightest Fire tablet we’ve tested so far, with a peak brightness of 504cd/m². It may still struggle with glare in direct sunlight, but you won’t need to close the curtains on a sunny day to enjoy the display. Features a large and vivid 11-inch, 2000 x 1200 resolution display; a new slim, lightweight aluminum design; and a fast and powerful 2.2Ghz octa-core processor with 4GB of RAM Smart home controls—With the Device Dashboard on the home screen, seamlessly control your Alexa-enabled smart home devices directly from Fire Max 11; and with Show Mode, turn your Fire Max 11 into an Echo Show-like screen for your smart home. The company offers trade-in and recycling schemes and publishes information on its various sustainability efforts. Price

Enhanced cameras—With the 8 MP front- and rear-facing cameras, 1080p HD video recording, rear auto-focus, and front camera in landscape orientation, Fire Max 11 is great for video calls with friends or family. The Fire Max 11 is plenty powerful enough to handle typical tablet tasks thanks to its Mediatek MTK8188J processor and 4GB of RAM. While you will see it stutter and slow when playing demanding games, I never had any issues browsing the web or working with documents.

The smooth aluminium body looks and feels far superior to other hard plastic Fire tablets. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The GuardianPros: good screen, good speakers, good battery life, microSD card slot, USB-C charging, aluminium body, fingerprint scanner. A thin and light design—The slim and durable aluminum design weighs just over a pound, with slim bezels and strengthened glass, and is three times as durable as the iPad 10.9” (10th generation). It’s frustrating to have an otherwise excellent device that doesn’t let me work in the way I want to out of the box. But in a very short amount of time, with minimal effort and technical knowledge, the Fire Max 11 suddenly became a lot more useful to me. I understand why the Fire Max 11 doesn’t have Google apps on board out of the box, but seeing how well Docs, Gmail, and other apps work on it once they are installed only made the situation even more unfortunate. Even more entertainment YouTube app on the Fire Max 11 Andy Boxall/Digital Trends FireOS does offer you the option to create and manage multiple user and child profiles, a feature Apple's iPads can't match. I have the rare pleasure of reporting that it actually did better than advertised in our testing lab. " If you have the tablet set up like a landscape painting with the webcam along the topmost edge the buttons and port are on the right side, making it even more awkward for a leftie like me to adjust the volume when working or watching a video on the tablet because I have to reach across the screen to access them. Image quality is pretty good for a budget tablet. The average Delta E of 2.51 means that colour accuracy is largely on the money, if not up there with the best, and the contrast ratio of 1,657:1 is very respectable. The sRGB gamut coverage of 90.5% and the volume of 95.8% is nothing to get too excited about, however.Basic split-screen apps are all Fire OS can manage, here with the Microsoft Office app on the left and Evernote in Silk on the right. The only model we don’t have figures for is the Fire HD 10 Plus, due to issues with Fire OS running our benchmarking software – more on that in the next section. On the surface, the Fire Max 11 has plenty going for it: the design is stylish, performance and battery life are terrific and the display is crisp and colourful. Better still, the optional keyboard and stylus are competent enough to – in theory – make the Fire Max 11 a solid laptop replacement. If I just wanted to watch things on Prime Video, read my Kindle library and browse the web, the Fire Max 11 would be a premium choice that does all that for hundreds less than competing tablets.Compared to pretty much any of the best cheap Android tablets, the Fire Max 11 is well-positioned. But there are still a few competing options that are worth consideration, starting with the Pixel Tablet. With the case on, you'll still have complete access to all cameras, buttons, and ports of your device, ensuring unhindered usage. It's a tempting proposition, but don't forget you're hamstrung by the limits of FireOS, which doesn't let you access the full range of apps available on Android tablets (including the Google Play Store) without a lot of extra effort.
