About this deal

Flip the phone over and you’ll find a 32MP hole-punch selfie camera embedded into the top of the display that’s more than enough for selfies and video calls, but as you might expect, most photography should be left to the rear lenses. Performance The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G design is similar to the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, but its camera housing layout has changed a bit, and it looks much cleaner now. The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a lot going for it, but as the new high-end of the Galaxy A series it’s creeping closer to the Galaxy S series in terms of features and pricing – especially if you’re prepared to look at the previous generation of S series handsets. You could be forgiven for dubbing the A54 the S23a. The easiest way to listen to audio on the Galaxy A54 is with wireless headphones. While they can certainly be more pricy than wired options, there are still plenty of wireless headphonesand wireless earbudsthat are similarly priced to wired options. However, you can increase your phone’s storage capacity by inserting a Micro SD card of up to 1 TB.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 runs the latest Android 13, with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 over the top which isn’t too intrusive. That’s because most of said change is happening on the rear of the phone. The most immediately noticeable is that Samsung has ditched the contour camera housing present on last year’s model, instead opting for the same minimalistic design as the flagship Galaxy S23 line. The Samsung Galaxy A54 next to the Galaxy S23 The rear camera array is strong, with Samsung opting for a: new 50MP f/1.8 OIS main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide f/2.2 and a 5MP f/2.4 Macro lens. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G has had quite the upgrade in the design department compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A53 5G, though you might not notice it by looking at it front-on.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G specs

The display is dynamic, dropping between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on what you’re doing, though you can also force a 120Hz refresh rate at the expense of battery life. It won’t drop down to a battery-saving 1Hz, but what mid-range phone does? Samsung announced the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G today. The two new mid-range phones are full of surprises, with Samsung giving them a few higher-end features than usual, such as a more polished exterior, better audio during phone calls and video calls, improved Nightography and camera AI, and better displays, to name a few. Thankfully that time has yet to come, and as far as the brand new Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 are concerned, they each feature a standard 3.5mm audio port for your wired earbuds / headphones needs. Of course, they also take advantage of Bluetooth 5.0 so you'll be able to pair either one of these devices with whatever wireless headphones or Galaxy earbuds you desire. Charging isn’t quite up there either, especially when powering such a large-capacity battery, capping out at just 25W – and you don’t get a charger in the box either. That means that even once you’ve sourced a charger, the process is slow, reaching just 41% in half an hour of charging, with a full charge taking 1 hour and 33 minutes. The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes in four colours: White, Violet, Graphite, and Lime. My personal favourites are Lime and Violet! Features and performance

But unlike the A53, which had a 64MP primary shooter, the Galaxy A54 uses a 50MP sensor for its primary shooter. Besides that, everything else is the same, even the selfie camera. The Galaxy A54 also has eye comfort functionality which reduces blue light when reading and using the device.

The age of the 3.5mm audio port is fading even in lower-cost phones

That’s also without using the phone to listen to music and otherwise kill time on the two-hour trip from London to Paris via Eurostar, so I thought I’d put that to the test on the way home. Reader, I was very disappointed. I took the phone off charge at around 10:30am, used it for maps, listening to music and playing a couple of games on the Eurostar and the battery dwindled to just 30% by 3:30pm. Safe to say it didn’t make it until that night without a top-up. When it comes to photography, that 50 MP camera figure holds its own, delivering impressive detail even if the colours are a bit over-saturated by default. Outside during the day, photos look vivid but not over-processed, although the sky looks a little too blue and the trees a little too green. There’s a USB-C port for charging, but it’s limited to 25W so you miss out on the fastest fast charging. There’s no AC charger in the box, just a USB-C cable. More surprisingly, you miss out on wireless charging completely. When it comes to performance, the device may not have the Snapdragon processor of the S23 but it was fast and responsive when we used the thing. The Galaxy A14 also supports a Bluetooth connection to wireless speakers and other audio players, such as smart TVs. The Galaxy A14 5G uses Bluetooth 5.2, the current industry standard.
