About this deal

At first the images were inconsequential: a maid trying on Tella’s favorite gown; her father cheating at cards. Then the visions of the future grew more upsetting, until one day, immediately after Scarlett’s engagement to the count, Tella saw a most disturbing image. During Caraval, Tella hadn’t been entirely certain who worked for Legend. But all of his performers would be on the boat to Valenda—Legend might even be on the boat as well, giving her the opportunity she needed to finally get the one thing her friend required. Tella was glad her sister had finally lost herself in some happiness. Scarlett deserved every joy in the Empire, and Tella hoped it would last. She’d heard Julian didn’t have a reputation for stringing girls along, he never carried on relationships after Caraval, and he’d not even been scripted to stay with Scarlett after bringing her to Legend’s isle. But he lied for a living, which made it difficult for Tella to trust him. Yet, as the pair stood there with their arms wrapped around each other, and their heads leaning closer together, they looked like two halves of the same heart.

The aching in Tella’s head returned, and this time it had nothing to do with the drinks she’d consumed the night before. She couldn’t shake the sense something was missing from the letter. She swore there’d been more to it when she’d read it at the party. Nigel agrees to give Tella a clue in exchange for her rest. He tells her that Legend’s name can be won in the upcoming round of Caraval when Legend greets the winner of the game. Nigel takes the next four days of Stella’s sleep…the final days of the journey to Valenda Island. Tella makes it to Dante’s room before sleep overtakes her. Tella accidentally wastes her free question. So when she sees a wanted poster of her mother hanging in the shop, she has to give something to Aiko. The poster denotes her mother’s true name: Paradise. Aiko requires Tella’s last memory of her mother before she gives Tella information about her. Tella eventually relents. Let's just say... Legend has enemies. Someone wants his true identity unmasked, and if Tella doesn't discover him and hand him over, she'll face losing everything, including her own life.ANMOLLLL! THIS BUDDY READ WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE SAME WITHOUT YOU, SIS! You made the experience of this second book what it was! Can’t wait for book 3 with you now! ONE STEP CLOSER TO OUABH!

first off, i want to apologize for taking so long to write this review, school has been so tough, and i haven't found the time <3 Other aspects of the plot will also have you frequently questioning yourself. As was true in Caraval, the boundary between reality and make-believe is a bit fuzzy in Legendary. Much like Tella, you will constantly be wondering whether what is happening is actually happening or if it is just a part of Legend’s game. And there are so many twists and big reveals that you are never at risk of boredom; the story retains your interest throughout its entirety. It's not like it really bothered me, it just made an impression on my reading experience that had me making faces and laughing. <--which isn't a deal-breaker for me.

I like characters that no one really can shove into a role. He’s not the hero, the good guy of this story. But he’s also not the villain, the bad guy. He’s something in between. When you truly care about someone, aren't you supposed to be honest, even if it means you might lose that person?” On the one hand I did like Dante and his arrogant but loyal way. But on the other hand I always distrust him. I always had a bad feeling with him.

I'm actually a bit disappointed by this book, which is of course very surprise given how much I loved Caraval, and given how much everyone has loved Legendary. I felt so meh about this book while reading it, and when I finished it, I was left with a rather sour taste in my mouth. Definitely not what you would want to feel after reading a supposed masterpiece. But these things happen. I liked the way she always tried to see who’s lying and who’s honest, who to trust and distrust. She always tried to see the right paths and how she wanted the game to end.I liked that the author not only improved in the parts of characters and relationships, she also improved her writing, the story and in some way the world building.

dante dante dante please find a personality. he’s so boring omg how can anyone root for him. he has no charisma. i did not care for him. and that whole “fake fiance” business was his own doing, so don’t be getting mad about it you donut. this was why love was so dangerous. love turned the world into a garden, so beguiling it was easy to forget that rose petals were as ephemeral as feelings, eventually they would wilt and die, leaving nothing but the thorns.”

Publication Order of Once Upon a Broken Heart Books

first of all, let’s state the obvious: i didn’t like this book that much. it’s something that i wasn’t expecting since i had high hopes after seeing a lot of people saying it was going to be better than the first one, and well... i don’t think it was. it’s not necessarily bad, some things were enjoyable, but Caraval was slightly better.
