Dyson's V11 Absolute takes a whopping four-and-a-half hours to fully charge for up to 60 minutes of runtime. You’ll need to fully charge the vacuum cleaner before first use, which means you won't be able to get going straight away. That said, unless noise is a particular issue for you, the advantages of this vacuum cleaner more than outweigh its volume levels.

In either case, Boost mode sees up to a four-minute run-time improvement over the V10. Note that Boost mode will rarely be required; you’ll be fine in Eco or Medium modes for much of the time.

It’s also worth noting that the design is completely symmetrical, so the V11 Absolute is just as easy to use whether you’re left- or right-handed. There’s also a handy wand storage clip, which makes it easy to carry a couple of extra tools around with you. If you’ve used a V10, then the Dyson V11 will look familiar. It retains the same basic design, with the large bin (big enough for getting around a standard house) inline with the motor for better performance over the older models, such as the Dyson V8. Powerful, efficient and with little touches that make a huge difference, the Dyson V11 Absolute outperformed all other cordless vacuum cleaners we put through testing. Turn the vacuum cleaner around and the new screen is impossible to miss. Adding an LCD to a cordless vacuum may seem like madness at first, but once you start using the V11 it makes a lot of sense.

Pet hair was the next test, and again the V11 Absolute performed impeccably, cleaning the hair from the rug with little effort – the results were equally evident from looking at the amount of hair collected in the bin, highlighting its useful size for a cordless cleaner. Torque cleaner head automatically detects floor type to optimise suction for either carpets or hard floors Any way you cut it, this is an expensive vacuum cleaner and one that many people may find it hard to justify. You can choose between eco mode (which gives maximum runtime), auto/medium mode (which automatically alters the suction power for carpets and hard floors), and boost mode for ingrained dirt. This is accomplished using the selection button on the display screen.Our tester couldn’t fault the Dyson’s performance on carpets. At this point, you may as well buy a slightly cheaper companion cordless cleaner to go with your main vacuum. A new, higher-capacity lithium-ion battery means the runtime of up to 60 minutes matches the V10 models, despite the V11’s extra power, and the trigger switch means no wasted battery caused by the motor running when you’re not actually cleaning. The filter and floor heads can be removed for cleaning, and there’s no need to get your hands dirty emptying the V11 – just push the lever down and the 0.76-liter bin pops open, dropping the dirt straight in the bin. There are several reasons Dyson gives to justify the added premium for the V11, but the main one is the V11’s new motorised High Torque cleaner head. Large debris (rice, spilled cereal and dried leaves) were whisked away in no time, and smaller debris (toast crumbs, washing powder and sugar) vanished in just a couple of swipes.Alison found the mini motorised tool useful for pet bedding, the dusting brush great for blinds, curtain poles, light fittings and skirting boards, and the crevice tool a must for upholstery, for reaching the spaces between kitchen appliances and for other hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.
