STUDENTS from a Manchester university have designed a fast-boiling kettle that's so quiet it won't drown out the sound of a television, radio or mobile phone. Swan work very closely with our community as we find that constant engagement benefits both sides of this beautiful relationship, helping us get to know you more and more every day! We hear your kitchen layout desires, and we continuously make efforts to support your needs. Consider yourselves taken under our big Swan wing! Students designed the kettle as part of a task devised by Isle of Man based Strix, which is regarded as a world leader in the design of control systems for electric kettles. In recent years impatient consumers have demanded kettles that boil faster and faster. But boosting the power has meant an increase in the associated noise. An impressive 3kW concealed heating element provides a rapid boil for those busy mornings when you need a caffeine fix fast, and this highly durable stainless steel kettle boasts a generous 1.7 litre capacity capable of boiling up to 8 cups at once, ideal for when the house is busy.

The students believe the new kettle could become widely available - and would cost just 20 per cent more than models already on the shelves. Natasha Davis - one of the students on the design, materials and manufacture course - said: ''It's been a great experience and the skills we have used in this project will be essential to our future careers.'' Concealed heating element– Provides a rapid boil and prevents internal damage, stopping the appliance furring up with limescale.Scale filter– Easily removable and washable, this filter prevents limescale build up and keeps your cuppa perfectly fresh. This may be because the colour doesn’t suit your imagined idea of the product, or the logo doesn’t sit where you’d like. The materials also need to pass multiple tests and have to be thoroughly assessed. The students have not only reduced the noise at source, but also found ways of preventing the noise being transmitted to the human ear,'' said Prof David Hayhurst, from the department of mechanical, aerospace and manufacturing engineering.
