About this deal

Thank you to Netgalley and Firefly Press for providing me with a copy of ‘Keeper of Secrets’ by Sarah J Dodd in exchange for my impartial review. All opinions stated above are my own. A Keeper of Secrets is a highly intelligent creature, a being whose silvered words and languid gestures belie its true power. It is claimed these are the most entrancing of all immortals, and that to look upon one is to surrender every last shred of self-will. A Greater Daemon of Slaanesh knows the most intimate desires of every mortal being, and will use this horrific knowledge to gain power over its foes, seducing them with whispered promises they cannot hope to resist. Embodiments of the alluring power of pleasure, the very presence of a Keeper of Secrets is enough to bring even the most stalwart warrior to their knees in anguish and ecstasy. Pain is simply another sensation to be bestowed upon others, or to be enjoyed when others inflict it, for all sensation is a blessing to a Keeper of Secrets. These potent servants of Slaanesh feed upon the rampaging hope and the thrill of fear to be found within their mortal enemies, as they feast upon terror and despair as well as lust and delight. Clepsyrian - K'rst'il - Litheclaw - Luxsion - Masque of Slaanesh - Mendeziron - Qular Vo - Shalaxi Helbane - Syll'Esske ( Esske - Syll Lewdtongue) - Xia'slae'shesos

For a hundred and one years it expended its followers against the Fyreslayer lodge of Ulgaen before a traitor allowed it access to the hold. Then there Janice’s own story - and she does have a story - but has hidden it away. Digging deeper you can see that topics such as suicide, our treatment of the elderly and alcoholism are sensitively handled with this book offering varying degrees of depth and sentiment but all up providing such truth through its tender writing. You will be cheering loudly for Janice and dearly hope she gets her happily ever after from a past that has confined and defined her for too long. Cleaner Janice knows that it is in people's stories that you really get to know them. From recently-widowed Fiona and her son Adam; to opera-singing Geordie; and the awful Mrs "YeahYeahYeah" and her fox terrier, Janice has a unique insight into the community around her. When Janice starts cleaning for Mrs B - a shrewd woman in her nineties - she finally meets someone who wants to hear her story. But Janice doesn't have a story to share. Mrs B is no fool and knows there's more to Janice than meets the eye. What is Janice hiding? As well as being vicious warriors, Keepers of Secrets are also capable of weaving powerful spells of misdirection and mystification. They invade the thoughts of their enemies, sending them visions of glory, titillating their egos, and caressing their inner desires to lead them astray. They seek to give and receive sensation in all forms, be it pain or pleasure, but there is nothing more enjoyable to them than the corruption of the noble and pure. They also are surrounded by a breeze that confuses all enemies around and allows the daemon to prey on them easily. [1]

She wants to hammer home with true conviction that she is the story collector. That she gathers stories because she doesn’t have a story. She wants to shout this loudly to drown the little voice within her.’ In a Nutshell: The book tries hard to match up to the outstanding cover but after a point, it just bored me. I have a feeling that my rating would have been lower had I been actually reading this instead of listening to it. But it does have its good moments. ABOUT 'THE KEEPER OF STORIES': Cleaner Janice knows that it is in people’s stories that you really get to know them. From recently-widowed Fiona and her son Adam; to opera-singing Geordie; and the awful Mrs ‘YeahYeahYeah’ and her fox terrier, Decius, Janice has a unique insight into the community around her.

EXCERPT: She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they always had done, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her… Step 2: Use a smaller brush to carefully paint the details of the model, such as the face, hair, and armor trim, using appropriate colors. For instance, use a pale skin tone like Kislev Flesh for the face, a contrasting color like Screamer Pink for the hair, and a metallic shade like Runelord Brass for the armor trim. At an unknown date in the 41st Millennium, N'Kari and the Prophet of Jostero forged an alliance, and he drew a portion of the Realm of Chaos into the mortal universe, pulling Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights Kaldor Draigo through along with it. Draigo was thus briefly reunited with his Chapter once more, for a brotherhood of the Grey Knights had arrived on Jostero to combat N'Kari's threat.Janice is a cleaner, she's married to Mike and they have a grown up son Simon. Janice spends her days catching buses, cleaning people’s houses, some of her customers are nice to her and others don’t consider she’s a human being and has feelings. Cassie Hunt is a woman with a less than happy childhood. When the story begins, Cassie is being bullied by some older children. My heart broke for her for reasons which I will explain later. The older kids are taunting her about her father as well as physically assaulting her. Cassie's sister does manage to save her and both girls make their way home. Before they get there they sort of witness the tragic murder of their father but they don't say anything. We then move forward in the story and meet Cassie the adult. Cassie is still affected by her past but she works in archaeology, the love of which she inherited from her aunt. Cassie is on a dig when she gets the sort of call that we all dread- the phone call to tell her that her beloved aunt is dying. Her aunt has some secrets that she doesn't want revealing and she enlists Cassie's help to ensure that they remain hidden. However, the deeper Cassie digs, the more secrets she uncovers. Will Cassie manage to honour her aunt's wishes? What does Cassie uncover? Is her safety under threat? Well for the answers to those questions and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. With each Spirit Stone consumed the might of N'Kari increased, and by the time the Grey Knights arrived, his power had increased tenfold, the beast having only feasted on but a fraction of the Aeldari souls to be found within the craftworld's vaults. Ordinarily, to fight such a foe would be beyond even the Grey Knights, but the wisdom of the Prognosticars prevailed, as they had bid Captain Pelenas, who commanded the Grey Knights force, to take as many Purifiers as would go.

This was a well-written story that really focuses on characterisation. It is what I would consider an ‘observational’ drama, and this feeds into Janice’s character as a ‘story-teller’ or, as some may call her, a bit of a gossip. The cleansing azure flames roared through the halls like a hungry spirit, consuming the daemons in its path, leaving those hellspawn that survived as ripe prey for the advancing Grey Knights.
