About this deal

This challenge sparks the start of the Great Game, a competition to decide who will become the Night Brothers’ successor and determine the future of magician-kind.

I love the cast of characters, and their development in this book, especially the relationships between Amari and Elsie/Lara/Jayden/Dylan - essentially Amari’s relationship with anyone.

The first book in this series, AMARI AND THE NIGHT BROTHERS was one of my favourite reads of 2021, and it’s my number one recommendation for patrons looking for books like Harry Potter. I hope Harlowe goes to the Sightless Depths and get's her vocal chords permanently removed, and Dylan gets better. I think at the end of the day, this book is missing the fun and charm of the first book, and that definitely impacted my enjoyment.

As an old villain comes back to haunt them, chaos ensues, resulting in Amari having to enter a terrifying competition known as the Great Game. The world building is incredible, the history, the themes, the magick, the characters, it's all so freaking beautiful! I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. But I have wanted to get to this one as soon as I finished the first book and the wait was well worth it.But her refusal allows someone else to step forward, a magician with dangerous plans for the League. For example, Alston’s reintroduction to Jayden and Quinton in the book needed more references to the previous story.

Regardless of my slight, and I do mean very slight, diminished enjoyment, this is still hands-down one of the best Middle Grade Fantasy series on the market currently.

The Great Game is both mysterious and deadly, but among the winner’s magical rewards is Quinton’s last hope—so how can Amari refuse? From the first pages, Amari is at once self-possessed and an underdog, battling racism, bias and poverty, all later mirrored in her efforts to find her brother inside the fantastical labyrinth of the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Parents reach out to me asking for the title of these books because their kids won’t stop talking about it.
