If anyone stood a good chance at turning these misfortunes around, it was always going to be Motorola. It was about time the low-cost smartphone maker showed both Nokia and Samsung how it was done, and the new Moto G22 could do just that.

I was able to get through a full day of use, with 90Hz active and around 3hrs 30mins of screen-on time, with more than 50% in the tank. I’m confident I could have made it through a second day, as long as I wasn’t expecting it to be a particularly intense one. It’s a familiar story in terms of graphics processing, too. The Moto G22 squeezed out an average frame rate of just 17fps in the onscreen portion of the GFXBench Manhattan 3 test, which is a staggering 41% less than last year’s model. Something really has gone awry here.The Moto G22 display is generous in size at 6.5 inches – and it stretches to an impressive (for the money) 90Hz refresh rate, if you activate it in the Settings menu. However, that’s just about where the goodwill ends. This screen isn’t very sharp either, with a resolution of just 1600 x 720 (HD+ or 720p). It looks reasonably clear in general navigation, but hold the phone next to a bog-standard 1080p rival and you’ll notice the difference – especially with web content and photos. Which, let’s face it, represents much of what you’ll be doing with this phone. This is a fairly large phone at 163.95 x 74.94 x 8.49mm. However, that’s around the same dimensions as your average flagship phone, and it weighs a little less at 185g. Beautifully printed, however, I do have to admit that I'm a bit scared of scratching it, but that's on me if I do. It's wonderfully colorful. I'm obsessed with Van Gogh, so this matches my Kindle's case perfectly! Even without these benchmark figures, the Moto G22 feels sluggish in use. The onscreen keyboard struggled to keep pace with what I was typing, and scrolling the settings menu in the camera app was an infuriatingly juddery experience.
