Own-brand or generic antihistamines are typically the cheapest option, often at least half the price of big-brand versions. Fexofenadine hydrochloride - brand name Allevia - is an antihistamine that GPs have been able to prescribe for some time. However, it's now available over-the-counter at pharmacies and other retail outlets, although it isn't particularly widely available. Why? Well, despite the fact that your standard dose of medication will have a ton of different ingredients, there's usually only one that matters: the active ingredient. This is the one that actually does the work, and as long as it's in there, you're sorted. But the downside is that supply can't keep up with demand during the recent boiling hot weather which has seen 'pollen bombs' across the country. So to get rid of the pollen in your room, just do exactly what you would to get rid of dust: hoover. Antihistamine tablets typically have one of two active ingredients: cetirizine or loratadine. Unlike some older types of antihistamine, both of these are non-drowsy formulations, and are widely available. Although these older types of antihistamine are still available, they tend to cause drowsiness and can impact your performance, for example if you are driving or taking exams. If you are taking indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium you should leave two hours between times that you take Fexofenadine and the remedy. Pollen can make its way inside through open windows and vents. Keeping windows closed, particular at times when the pollen count is high - first thing in the morning and during the evening - can help. Using an air purifier may also help. Don’t hang washing outside. As pollen wafts around, it can fall onto your washing then when you take it off the line and inside you'll be bringing the pollen in with you.
