About this deal

Peated whiskey isn’t as popular in Ireland as it is in Scotland and you won’t find many distilleries selling it within their core range. An exception is Connemara, part of the Cooley distillery whose whisky also includes Kilbeggan. The combination of triple distillation in addition to the finest ingredients and cask ageing creates an elegantly smooth yet expressive whiskey with rich flavours that can be savoured neat, over ice or mixed into a long refreshing drink. Craft noted: “There was a broad spectrum with typical Irish profiles. A good balance between quality and price.” From this flight, there are clearly some bargains out there – an interesting category,” noted Kennard.

The third panel, chaired by Billy Abbott, ambassador at The Whisky Exchange, included: Caroline Roddis, editor of The Whisky Exchange; and drinks consultant Stephen Kennard, of SMJK Consulting. The other all-Championship clash saw Dundela defeat Ards by the odd goal in five at Wilgar Park. The Duns seemed to be untroubled with first half goals from Jay Magee and Guillaume Keke putting them firmly in control, followed by a Rhys Annett strike with just over ten minutes to go but Eamon Scannell and Gary Donnelly scored late on the for the visitors to set up a nervy finish. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. When most people think whiskey, they think Scottish. Over the water in Ireland though, they’ve been making fine, distinctive, whiskeys (in Gaelic – fuisce or uisce beatha) a very long time.

Green Spot whiskey used to be a secret that Dubliners kept to themselves, but now it’s travelled well beyond Ireland to worldwide acclaim. Made at the Midleton distillery, Green Spot is the oldest name in pot still whiskey, distilled in copper from a mix of malted and unmalted barley. Craft said: “There was nothing in this category not to enjoy. Lots to choose from within that Irish profile. There was diversity in style but true consistency in quality.” Samuel’s Gelston’s Single Malt Irish Whiskey is the latest creation from the historical firm, founded in 1830, known for its expertise in ageing, blending and bottling Irish whiskeys. Philip Day shares his thoughts on this single malt Irish whiskey. Two intermediate sides were drawn to face Premiership opposition. NIFL Premier Intermediate team Moyola Park are set to face Glentoran at home, while another NIFL Premier Intermediate outfit, Banbridge Town, have a derby tie to look forward to, and they will have home advantage. Portadown will be their opponents. Samuel Gelston’s Single Malt is defined as a non age statement Single Malt, a versatile premium whiskey, made from a blend of locally sourced Irish malted barley and grain that is triple distilled for smoothness, then matured in the finest quality ex-bourbon oak casks.

Karen Taylor, co-founder of the Whisky for Everyone blog, was at the helm of panel five. Taylor was joined by Elise Craft, co-host of The Whisky Squad; and Ivan Orsini, head bartender at The Aubrey in London’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Two Championship sides will be grabbing the headlines, however; one defeating top-flight opponents and the other coming from two goals down to almost force extra-time.

The excitement about the Irish whiskey category was palpable throughout the tasting, and showed there are some true gems to be found on the Emerald Isle. Hot on the heels of the excellently tasty Samuel Gelston’s Irish Whiskey Cream Liqueur, reviewed recently, today let’s investigate the multi-award winning Samuel Gelston’s Single Malt Irish Whiskey. In the Blended – Ultra Premium segment, it was Gold-standard across the board. Five Gold medals were presented in this flight: Midleton Very Rare 2022, with “apple, yellow peach” notes; “malty, fruit-focused” Jameson 18 Years Old; “delicious” Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Old with “pecan pie, fudge” flavours; Writers’ Tears Mizunara Japanese Cask Finish, with “subtle vanilla and oak”; and The Irishman Caribbean Cask Finish, full of “lovely fruitiness”. Eight Silver medals completed the opening round, with winners including Tullamore Dew Caribbean Rum Cask Finish, Ha’Penny Original, and Wise Owl Whiskey. Gold and Silver medallists – Tullamore Dew Honey and Jameson Cold Brew, respectively – were also enjoyed.

The most common of these is ex-bourbon, which lends sweet vanilla flavours to the whiskey, but you’ll also find sherry casks regularly used along with an increasing number of more unusual barrels as producers look to satisfy more adventurous drinkers. Belfast Distillery Company’s McConnell’s Irish Whisky 5 Years Old also took home a Gold medal after impressing with “super sharp, fresh green apples” on the nose and “white chocolate and pepper spices” on the palate. Further Golds went to The Irishman Harvest, Ha’Penny Four Cask, Jameson Crested, and Teeling Small Batch. Four Silvers were also awarded.
