About this deal

What is it The name says it all. This little farm nestled in the outskirts of KL has their own airy dining space, where they serve the freshest organic produce, homemade jams and house-smoked meats, all varying by the season. This is the kind of space Singaporeans can only dream of.

We’re here today for one such shared meal, a Hari Malaysia feast (it’s a long weekend). The spread of home cooking is presented down the centre of long wooden tables for eight to 10 guests. There’s only two of us so we’re seated with others uniting to celebrate the public holiday with good food, fresh air and new friends. Communal Table Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur – A Little Farm On The Hill This is a rather apt book to read in summer, as often the discussion of how to keep bees safe emerges, as they play such a critical role in the world, and this is a story that encompasses that as a theme. Admittedly I could have done without descriptions of angry swarms of bees as I tend to run a mile if I see a single bee, but other than that, there is definitely a useful message to be taken from that element of the book. The writing is evocative and I could practically smell the herbs in the air in Crete, taste the various foods and when there was the sense of danger, my heart was beating extra fast for the characters. This is easily my favourite book so far from Jo Thomas, an author who seems to improve with each book and they are all fabulous! For those of you wishing to venture further afield, there is the Peak District to explore, with Ashbourne (the gateway to the Peaks,) only 10 minutes away by car. Hill farm incomes in the UK have recently seen great decrease following drops in lamb and beef prices. [6] Therefore, subsidy support has become vital for Hill farm survival, and the policies have been changing in response to continuous uncertainty in the sector. Ellastone, found a mile's walk downhill to the east, has a rich artistic history; it is thelocation/inspiration of a novel by George Elliot as well as being the place where Handel composed his Water Music. Nell totally changed once she knew she had a quest. OK there was an element where she missed her daughter and worried for her and it did become slightly repetitive but I suppose that's only natural for a mother. I felt she took on this challenge and viewed it as something personal. She wasn't going to let the strange noises coming from the top of the mountain put her off. Even if handsome yet abrupt Georgios didn't appear all that embracing of her quest she would do the best she could for the people she had come to hold so dear. Apart from attempting to discover dittany for the sake of the community, Nell had her own personal mission regarding the events of 18 years ago. Our cooking is a natural extension of our farming. Rustic yet sophisticated, it draws on the flavours of world cuisine and is centred on the produce we grow organically. Menus vary seasonally with the produce harvested at the farm but our speciality salads are always delectable and our smoked meats meltingly delicious. The old kilns and PotteriesofStoke on Trent are a great option on a rainy day, and thebrilliant Monkey Forest at Trentham Gardens comes highly recommended as a great day out for both children and adults.

In the near future, a stay at A Little Farm On The Hill will be possible. (Right now, the place is only open for meals and the occasional terrarium workshop.) The proposed accommodation allows guests to live close to the farm (just on the other side of the stream) and will provide a peaceful retreat. ‘You gain a different experience when you come up here.’ Pete says. ‘The environment is different; you’re surrounded by sounds from the birds and insects, plus there’s fresh air all around.’ Upland areas are not traditionally favourable for agricultural practices. The majority of Hill farming land in England is classified as Less Favoured Area (LFA), and the LFA constitutes 17% of land farmed in England. [3] The LFA is further divided into Severely Disadvantaged Areas (SDAs) and Disadvantaged Areas (DAs), which make up 67% and 33% of the LFA respectively. [3] These areas are classified as such on account of poor climate, soils, and terrain which cause higher costs in production and transportation as well as lower yields and less productivity. [3] The LFA is significant in England's farming on a whole despite these disadvantages: 30% of beef cows and 44% of breeding sheep come from LFAs. [3] Farming distinctively shapes the ecosystems of these zones, [3] and the agriculture practices in the uplands define and shape the environment and landscape. [1] During the meal, I was surprised at just how enjoyable the vegetables were – the green beans were crunchy, the peas were sweet, and the heirloom tomatoes (all four types) were some of the juiciest I’ve ever eaten. Fun fact: the tomatoes were grown in soil that has been steamed – in a pau steamer, no less – to get rid of bacteria, resulting in tomatoes that taste entirely different from the hydroponic tomatoes that we usually get.

Why we love it The weekend communal lunches at A Little Farm On The Hill (ALFOTH) are one of our favourite dining experiences in Malaysia, and we don’t say that lightly. It’s an escape from the city. It’s a beautiful farm-to-table experience. It’s the magic of having a relaxing meal of sophisticated yet comforting dishes in the likes of slow roasted organic meats with prunes and apricot, baked pumpkin goat cheese with toasted almonds, homemade flatbreads and dips and baked trout with bunga kantan (ginger flower in Malay), all while breathing in clean, fresh mountain air.

Three individual walks are described, all of which can be started at the farm ( Ellastone is approximately 20 minutes walk from the farm along country lanes), Directions from the farm can easily be provided..please just ask :-) The walks in the 'Ellastone and the Weavers Walks' leaflet below start in the village of Ellastone and are provided courtesy of East Staffordshire Borough Council. These protect various wild animals, plants and habitats under the European Union’s Habitats Directive"

Please note that private lunch bookings are not available on Saturdays and Sundays. Instead, we have a communal lunch where several groups share the Farmhouse space like a normal restaurant situation. The income from calves and lambs has remained constant, while the costs of farm upkeep have risen sharply (including items such as feed, straw, fuel, or fertilizer). [5] Because hill farming is becoming increasingly less profitable an increasing number of farmers have switched from the traditional hearty but less profitable animals which graze the moors to mainstream more profitable animals.
