About this deal

A BUDGET GRINDER - Comes with stainless steel conical burrs in a decent 38mm size, TIMEMORE CHESTNUT C2 FOLD provides a pretty consistent grind in an affordable price for anyone interested in pour over coffee! You’re on a tight budget: Compared to more expensive brands like Comandante and Orphan, Timemore grinders are relatively affordable. But you can find cheaper options if you’re trying to create the ultimate budget brewing set-up. However, these burrs falter when it comes to speed. Grinder with the C3 is slower than with the C2, and the flavour and clarity aren’t noticeably improved. Given that the S2C burrs are the major change from the C2 – and thus the main reason for the cost increase – it is disappointing that they don’t live up to the hype. Portability 4/5 Both the C2 and C3 use stainless steel conical burrs. The kind of burrs in each grinder is the biggest difference between the two. I’ve tested various Timemore C2 grind settings including those recommended by the manufacturer in the user manual. Their guidelines were ok, but I had better results with very different settings.

Really, there’s a reason the Timemore C2 remains popular. Making the Timemore C2 Work For Espresso? Even though this hand grinder is great for manual brewing, you may not appreciate the grind quality when you’re cranking out enough for a large Chemex (which tends to take around 50 grams of coffee). And I love you for it. That’s why I’ll tell you to look elsewhere if fine-tuning grind settings is what gives you a reason to get up each morning. The Final Verdict If you want something more premium feeling and/or espresso capable, I think the Jx and Jx Pro is where it’s at. Both those models should be able to last a decade at least, while I’m not sure that goes for the C2.It’s also such an established machine that it’s possible to find it used. As if this wasn’t already a budget-friendly choice. Trying out the C2 is about as risk-free as you’re going to get. The Timemore Chestnut C2 is pleasant to use, but grinding two full grounds cups’ worth daily, or multiple times a day, could get old fast. The Timemore Chestnut C2 is also easy to clean — once you get the hang of popping the adjustment dial and burr set in place with the spring.

So we were pleased to find that consistency was one of the best aspects of the new burr set in the Timemore C3. In tests, it outperformed the Timemore Slim Plus, which uses the same burrs found in the C2. What about espresso? It measures 14.7 cm tall by 5.2 cm wide, but its weight is an even more impressive 430 g – just under a pound. Its lightness is no accident. It stems from the efficient design, choice of aluminium over steel, and the few plastic components. Compare that to the famous Comandante C40, which has a 6 cm width and weighs 739 g.Like its new and improved version, the Timemore Chestnut C3 or Timemore Grinder Go, the Timemore Chestnut C2 grinder has 38 mm stainless steel conical burrs, which is the standard size for many other coffee grinders of a similar size. The high-quality burrs in this burr grinder are made of 5-axis CNC. The hardness of the stainless steel burr grinder is HRC 55-58, which cuts the coffee beans swiftly and consistently. This burr set has a 420 high-quality grade score. For comparison, this is much more effective than typical ceramic burr grinders. Absolutely, the Timemore Chestnut C2 is worth it, especially if your focus is on filter coffee. If you want a hand grinder primarily for espresso, you should not buy the C2. The most pressing question regarding manual grinders is obviously how it performs when it comes to particle distribution. Superkop Lever Espresso Machine One of the most unique espresso makers currently on the market, this is our First Look at the Superkop ratchet lever espresso machine.

The C2 also has a pretty small capacity at only 25 grams (compared to other hand grinders that hold anywhere from 30 to even 40 grams). Best For That means you have to remember your preferred grind setting(s) AND you have to do a little math every morning — before you’ve had coffee. It’s not the lightest weight hand grinder. It is too big to fit inside an Aeropress plunger (the Porlex famously can do that); it isn’t ideal for espresso (though a burr upgrade will fix that). But it’s a pleasure to use, fast to grind, and produces a fantastic grind for drip, pour over, siphon, cloth brewing, Chemex, Aeropress, and press pot. The Q-model from 1Zpresso has the benefit that it fits inside an Aeropress, which makes it suitable for travel. However, as a daily workhorse, I’d probably take the C2 due to the bigger capacity and increase in speed. The Timemore C2 follows the general design template for manual grinders in 2020. It’s not trying to innovate too much, which is a good thing. Build quality is where Timemore products shine. I have yet to encounter one whose quality doesn’t blow me away for the price, and the C3 keeps this streak alive.

That should also help this hand grinder age a little more gracefully; burrs change over time, but a spring won’t lose tension that easily in a grinder (since it won’t undergo too much stress). On coarser settings for French press or the 4:6 method, you can almost achieve 1 gram per second, which is outrageous. On finer settings, you’re closer to 0,7-0,5 gram per second, which is still very, very acceptable. I’m not sure if the plastic is something you need to worry about – besides for aesthetic reasons. It seems well made and is not exposed to excessive force during regular operation. The Timemore C3 is an excellent hand grinder suitable for filter brewing and espresso. Its low cost and standout build quality make it one of the best-value manual coffee grinders on the market. That said, if you already own the C2, it’s not necessarily worth spending your money on the update. You’re unlikely to notice a huge improvement in flavour or user experience in exchange for your extra dollars. There isn’t much to distinguish the C2 and the C3 from the outside as the design is similar. Both are compact and minimal. They stand about 7.5 in. tall and have a diameter of about 2.5 in. Each has a sturdy aluminum alloy body that weighs just around a pound, so they’re both light and easy to carry. The C2 and C3 are both built with a textured body that allows for additional grip during grinding. This hand grinder is very consistent at the medium to coarser settings. But if you use a finer grind setting, you’re probably going to be a little disappointed.
