About this deal

Having taken so long to reach the top of the mountain - the win over Minter was his 54th fight - Hagler was in no hurry to begin the descent, with the rampaging southpaw stopping 11 of his next 12 opponents.

Four Kings: The intoxicating and captivating tale of four men

Boxing is a unique sport in its own way since fighters legacies are not just defined by their own ability but also about who they step into the ring with over the course of their career. Great factual information, Kimball had access to tell some great stories that I'm sure were not known before it was published, and it is comprehensive. On the second, Goody (Petronelli) walked over and asked with a smile, "Hey, kid, do you want to learn how to fight?Prime Video has announced a new all-access documentary telling the story of four British boxing legends. Four Kings captures the contests, fighters and the period with a wonderful perception and vividly conjures up those by-gone smoky and raucous ringside nights in Vegas. He is ranked first in Bleacher Report’s ’15 fastest boxers of all-time list’ and it is hard to argue with it when watching his performances.

For anybody who read George Kimball’s scintillating weekly columns on American columns in The Irish Times, you might be mystified that “Four Kings” doesn’t quite land it’s punches. Thus I was delighted to find this beautiful book, which told me details I had never heard, even though I followed the fighters and the sport closely. Hagler’s granite chin is renowned and historic, evident in his career-defining fight with the ‘Motor City Cobra’ where he ate right hands as if they were sweet treats. I feel for Duran, because he was already a bit past his prime, but still showed up to fight against all these guys. The other two greats dismally score 1 point apiece as they only had 1 yet emphatic win during this competitive time. The fierce rivalry between world champions and future Hall of Famers known as the “Four Kings”– Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns, and Sugar Ray Leonard – produced a Golden Age defined by the nine world championship fights between them and solidified their place among the greatest to ever live. If you cared about sports at all, you knew Roberto Duran and Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard. The last ‘Four Kings’ battle was also the weakest, as advancing age robbed Leonard and Duran of the magic they had shared earlier in the decade. Tommy Hearns was first known as the Motor City Cobra because his punches were so quick that his opponents never knew it until it was too late.

Poll: Who was the greatest of boxing’s legendary “Four Kings

I is a well written account of the Middleweight division during that time and the 4 legends that dominated that weight class. The sections on Roberto Duran and the accounts of his first two fights with Leonard were a highlight. In 1980, however, the sport was resuscitated by a riveting series of bouts involving an improbably dissimilar Sugar Ray Leonard , Marvellous Marvin Hagler , Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran . Pretty sure a guy who spoke his mind as freely as Duran did (always quoted in broken English, too) must have articulated his thoughts in easily-translatable Spanish somewhere.Duran sounds hilarious and frightening - a proper character, engaged in his own constant fight between the destruction and creation of himself, the world being a sideshow - while Hearns sounds laid-back, fairly (foul-mouthedly) inarticulate but quietly intelligent and probably the most likable of the four. Factor in Duran’s achievements at his natural poundage of 135, and the fact that he later managed to win a major belt at middleweight, and Roberto deserves to be placed in the ALL-TIME Top-10 – as he is in fact placed my many historians.

The first 10/10 attribute in this rank goes to Bleacher Report’s fifth-best defensive fighter in the sport’s history. It tells the story of the middleweight boxing division during the 1980s – widely recognised as the last glory era for the sport – where the four titans of Duran, Hagler, Leonard and Hearns fought out nine epic battles against each other over the course of the decade. Gentle giant Tommy Hearns represents Detroit’s hopes and dreams and after a devastating title fight, he’s crowned champion.By that stage, though, Hagler had already cemented his status as one of the all-time greats and the tangles he, Leonard, Hearns and Roberto Duran had with each other in the '80s would see them chronicled as the 'Four Kings'. The book also addresses the decline of boxing in the late '80s and '90s, exploring theories such as the separation of divisions, promotional conflicts among networks, and the impact of drug wars in inner-city communities, as suggested by Gil Clancy. On this day in 1987, Sugar Ray Leonard beat Marvelous Marvin Hagler by split decision to win the middleweight championship of the world.
