About this deal

I wish I was surprised that it's clear Jinger has gone from one cultish sect of Christianity, IBLP, to another one, Calvinism. His influence, along with the help of a pastor named Jeremy Vuolo, caused Jinger to see that her life was built on rules, not God’s Word.

While speaking to Us this month, Jinger referred to her childhood spiritual practice as “cult-like in many ways. Jinger was my fav Duggar and I was really hoping this book would be more personal stories but it very much focused on her life tangled up with a culty Christian leader and the way she slowly awakened to his falseness. You can tell that each word was chosen with care and designed to tell a truthful but intentionally low-drama account of Jinger's faith journey. Having followed the Dugger family since the very first days of 14 Kids and Pregnant Again, we've all been hanging out for one of the kids to break away and tell the truth about what it was really like growing up in the Duggar house, living with the strict rules imposed by the IBLP and Bill Gothard, under the creepy controlling patriarch Jim Bob Duggar. I was very impressed in how she laid out the things she was taught, countering with what the Bible actually says.Yet I have been attracted to stories like Jinger Duggar Vuolo's for years and continue to be attracted to them. She refers to Josh Harris as the leader of the deconstruction movement, even though he declared his lack of faith years after Recovering Grace and exvangelical communities had formed. What I appreciated so much about Jinger's book was that she was committed to telling her story without throwing her parents or family under the bus. I wish Jinger and I could just grab some tea or coffee and talk some more (and as far as social anxiety, I get it. Jinger does such a good job of graciously disentangling her faith in a way that honors her parents, family, and culture with clear honesty about the things that were not right or of Christ.

She sidesteps really delving into the true horrors of Gothard's abuse, as a story too graphic or details too hard to reshare. If anything, all the "noise" about deconstruction, false teachers (it seems every time I turn around, somebody who was once trusted is being accused of false teaching), and false doctrine, breaks my heart. But if the Son—Jesus says, referring to Himself—makes us free, then we “are free indeed” (John 8:36). She also used the same verses multiple times to prove different points, which is unimpressive to me.Refreshingly, she doesn't use Becoming Free Indeed to bash her parents and family, or even Bill Gothard (though he would darn well deserve it)! So many times I hear about people growing up like this and end up deconstructing their faith and walking away from it all together and honestly it makes me so sad. This is not a tell-all book on the Duggars, but it does expose many of the beliefs they were taught that turned out to be man-made rules (the man being Bill Gothard). But Jinger blames Bill Gothard for all of the bad religious teachings in her childhood and never puts responsibility on her parents for the way they raised her and her 18 siblings. I loved how close they were and how many kids they had, but as always, you're not aware of what's going on behind the scenes.

This book was a great peek into her journey and I loved her use of disentangling her faith rather than deconstructing. In promotion of the interview, Jinger posted to Instagram to share images from the accompanying magazine photoshoot. Second, my "why" is a little different from your average "deconstructing" Christian, but it is in their neighborhood.
