About this deal

This is the 4th Paulo Coelho book I've read, and my least favorite so far. Not that there's anything wrong with it, per se, but I can definitely see his evolution as a writer from this (his first) to The Witch of Portobello (his most recent and one of my faves). Okay, fine, I don’t know how to write a good book or how to live my life either, but I just know this one wasn’t it for me. Its not that I find anything wrong with these messages. They are important, but must be balanced with responsibility. In my experience, 'following your dreams' (or personal legend) is not the only way toward wisdom and strength. Is the person who struggles to put food on the table every day for his or her family, consciously realizing that he or she may not be following his or her 'personal legend' any less heroic than some traveler who leaves everything and everyone he or she is responsible for to go on a spiritual quest? Coelho comes close to labeling such people, as losers in life, which I find completely off the mark as some of these people have the most to offer in terms of wisdom.

Coelho was born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Coelho attended Jesuit schools and was raised by devout Catholic parents. He determined early on that he wanted to be a writer but was discouraged by his parents, who saw no future in that profession in Brazil. Coelho's rebellious adolescence spurred his parents to commit him to a mental asylum three times, starting when he was 17. "I have forgiven," Coelho said. "It happens with love, all the time - when you have this love towards someone else, but you want this person to change, to be like you. And then love can be very destructive." So what message are we supposed to take from this book then? Money is the most important thing in the world? Women are objects meant to be seen and valued for their beauty, there to serve you and wait around forever while you go on wild goose chases across continents in search of money? Many people complain, that parts in this book are written in a way that only Paulo can understand the full meaning, but this doesn't mean the book isn't worth reading if it can't be fully understood. This book isn't one of those that can be grasped with your first try as all the other books by this author. I'll admit that I didn't understand everything, but I'm not disappointed either because I know when I'll open it again, I will find out something new. That's what I like the most about Paulo's books, that they aren't a one time thing. If the sheep are only his"friends" as long as he brings them food, do they really count as friends? Are they not just following their needs? I think a big reason why I enjoyed this book was through my own personal experience, so I could see why it wouldn’t appeal to everyone. However, I would recommend it to those who have taken on a trip for a personal reason to grow and to change. Travel can cause us to question everything about ourselves, which is what Coelho really captures here and in many of this other works.

Welcome to the best game show on Goodreads, the pre-review game Who Said That? [Insert audience applause] Guess if the following quotes are from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho OR from a CEO/inspirational memoir: The Pilgrimage ( Portuguese: O Diário de Um Mago, "Diary of a Magus") is a 1987 novel by Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho. It is a recollection of Paulo's experiences as he made his way across northern Spain on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The novel serves as part adventure story, part guide to self-discovery. It was adapted into the 1997 adventure game Pilgrim: Faith as a Weapon, also written by Paulo Coelho. The secret is', Petrus finally said, 'you can only learn when you are teaching. Together we have walked the Strange Way to Santiago, but while you learned the ways, I learned the meaning of them. By explaining them to you, I really learned them myself. By becoming a guide I found my own way." A dazzing tale of the road traveled by ordinary people.” Coelho's book traverses the story and journey of a man (himself) learning to be extraordinary through the paradoxical beauty of simply understanding what is ordinary. As with all medicines, there are some side effects, and it is very important to read the warning before you take this drug: The book harps on about tapping into the Soul of the World, the Language of the World, about your one true path and other nonsense. The basic idea is that if you really want something and "listen to your heart", the whole universe will help you achieve it if you only look for omens. A questionable idea in a world where people no longer want to work hard and achieve independently.
