Void Rivals #1 is, ultimately, a very successful teaser for what's to come that raises all manner of questions about the future of the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises: What is going to happen to Darak and Solila? (I'm getting a Saga feeling from their interaction, I admit.) What made Jetfire crash onto the planetoid, and is it related to the same accident that sends Optimus Prime et al to Earth in Daniel Warren Johnson's upcoming Transformers series? Where is G.I. Joe in all of this? (Let’s note that the solicitation for Void Rivals #3 this August hints at some new characters being introduced…) And, outside of the story being told, what's next for each of these properties and the larger Energon Universe as a whole? The sky's the limit, it appears... and that's probably very much the reaction Skybound and Hasbro were hoping for. We started talking to Hasbro about taking over the Transformers and the G.I. Joe license almost two years ago. IDW had those licenses for a good long time and served those brands very well, so we had to come up with something that was new and different. I thought that one of the best things that we could do is strip everything down to its core and establish a new beginning with these characters in the shared Energon universe, where they can interact in organic ways.

Kirkman reveals that the idea for Void Rivals sprang directly out of his plans for the Energon UNiverse and his desire to create an original concept that could work seamlessly alongside two iconic franchises. There were a few intriguing deep cuts in #3, but if you're not au-fait with the intricacies of the lore then they'd be easy to miss. It makes sense - the comic has to establish a tone of its own without relying too heavily on the past, especially with Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers launching next week. Void Rivals is an ongoing comic series published by Skybound Entertainment starting in June 2023. The series serves as the launch of Skybound's Energon Universe, a shared universe featuring both Transformers and G.I. Joe coexisting alongside new creations.

I think it's important that all of the books in the Energon universe are kind of their own hub. If you love Void Rivals and that's the book that you most enjoy you can continue reading that and there will be little bits and pieces here and there that tie into the other books, but there's nothing [else] that you absolutely have to have to make sense of Void Rivals. More directly related to the story, the Agorrians and Zertonians are actually the same species, and their societies' rules are designed to keep them in the dark on the subject. Salila: Friends?! Return with the same sterling reputation... or do not return at all.The alien ship found by the protagonists makes a familiar whirring and clanking sound effect note CH-CHI-CHU-CHIK-CHI and transforms, revealing himself to be Jetfire, and the setting to actually be a Shared Universe. Well, Void Rivals takes place in deep space, so a lot of the references are going to be Transformers related - there's not a lot of G.I. Joe characters that are exploring the cosmos. I just thought, as a fan, if I were to go into a comic book store and buy a new comic and halfway through Freddy Krueger showed up and it was completely unexpected, that would be the most exciting thing in the world. So I'm hoping there's other people out there who feel like me!

Void Rivals was announced in February 2023 as part of an "all-new shared universe" developed by Skybound Entertainment.
