About this deal

Exclusive for the travel retail sector, the no age statement whisky is the younger sibling of Talisker Storm which was released in 2013. Talisker Dark Storm is bottled at 45.8% ABV and matured in heavily charred American oak casks. Talisker Dark Storm Tasting Notes I absolutely love this dram. Probably gave it a too low overall score because it’s hard to take travel retail NAS (non-age statement) whiskies seriously. Elitist I know, but what can I say, I’ve had too many bad experiences with travel retail NAS.

Palate: The palate exhibits some vanilla and butterscotch sweetness progressing to sea salt and seaweed, earthy at times with a hint of nuttiness before it end with salty and smoky notes. Talisker Dark Storm is dubbed as the smokiest single malt produced by the isle of Skye distillery. But for lovers of peat, how does it fare? Taste: all of the flavours are more sharp-edged in the mouth than in the nose; otherwise a good translation of the wonderful nose flavours. If there is some sherry here it is not immaculate, but is of acceptable quality. Water added bundled the flavours. Score: 22/25 with and and without water As well as replacing subsistence farmers with more profitable sheep, another of the MacAskill’s money-making schemes was distilling. In 1830, they opened their Talisker distillery in Carbost using the cleared populace as its workforce.Great release from the distillery on the Isle of Skye. Very powerful with smoke, intense aromas and taste. A character! Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. In 1960, the distillery burned down and was silent until 1962 while it was being rebuilt. A decade later the maltings closed and the distillery began getting its requirements from Glen Ord.

The distillery’s water comes from Cnoc nan Speireag (Hawk Hill). The malted barley used in production comes from Muir of Ord. Talisker whisky is typically peated to a phenol level of approximately 18–22 parts per million (ppm). No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. I couldn’t find more details about cask types being used. Talisker Storm (not the dark one) was aged in refill and toasted American oak casks, so my guess is that Dark Storm has American oak influence as well. Johnny I hardly knew ye!

Following that line, you give some speculation as to the reason for the price premium but what was in the bottle, much less at different points in this expression’s history, was really anyone’s guess – and, evidently, didn’t justify the premium to many. The 25 content was as much hearsay as the 3.We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. With water added, there's a floral or herbal note that pops up, fresh thyme maybe. A bit of honey. The peat smoke is still there with water, but the fruitiness changes. It tastes more like pears, and maybe a touch of orange. With water, the chalky minerality that defines Talisker for me is more evident. I prefer this with water. I have to admit, the 10 Year Old Talisker is more my style. Perhaps I'm curmudgeonly, but I prefer my Talisker with less fruitiness and more pepper, brine, smoke, and wet slate. Palate (undiluted): very soft arrival, more red fruit, developing to dry peat smoke (think burning leaves), and a little minerality. Hewie, thank you for joining in. Actually I think that 85 points for my tasting of Dark Storm out of a Glencairn glass might have been a little generous, influenced by how much I liked Dark Storm when tasted in the snifters.

The nose is bold and smoky. Smoked ham is rather prominent, together with lemons and banana. Later on, hints of liquorice and menthol appear. Comment: Wow! My two tastings of this whisky were quite a trip. I have experienced EXTREME variations before in tasting Talisker 57 North from different glass designs, but I was still unprepared for the experience of tasting this whisky twice 3 weeks apart in duration, from different glasses. When the bottle was freshly opened I drank it from a brandy snifter, and loved it much above typical review scores for this particular whisky. My initial score was 92 points. Three weeks later I tasted it again and many things had gone wrong. Was this merely the product of 3 weeks of air time? Then I thought about changing glasses, and I once again liked Dark Storm much more than I did out of a Glencairn glass. Drinking it again a second time out of a medium-sized brandy snifter I like Dark Storm almost as much as I had at first. So, reader be advised: this is an 89 point whisky to me out of a brandy snifter, but only an 85 point whisky for me out of a Glencairn! I will drink all future samples of Talisker Dark Storm from a snifterTalisker is the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye, enjoying a long and very successful history. Talisker has been the recipient of numerous accolades and medals from prestigious national and international competitions and boasts an incredible core range that includes Talisker 10 Year Old, a gold medal winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017 and 'Best Islands Single Malt' at the 2017 World Whiskies Awards, as well as Talisker 18 Year Old, which won ‘Best Single Malt In The World' at the World Whiskies Awards 2007. There's 'Storm' and then there's 'Dark Storm': One is ubiquitous, the other frustratingly difficult to find yet generally considered the most desirable NAS expression from a distillery that excels in youth. Judging by the success of previous shipments, we know Dark Storm is a favourite of many who otherwise would have to be traveling internationally to buy it. The peatiest whisky Talisker produce, maturation in heavily charred casks imparts even more smoke and pepper to an already intense malt. The result is extreme yet balanced. We've managed to secure another parcel while maintaining the sharpest price possible. One litre duty free exclusive bottling. 45.8% Alc./Vol.
