About this deal

I liked him already after watching SAS: Who Dares Wins, but now I like him and respect him even more. I praise the author for being brave enough to put his story out there and help dispel the image that somehow being a tough military type means that you have lost your ability to be affected by conflict and that you are invincible to mental health issues. The autobiography is of a man who had to deal with the wounds from battles as a Special Forces Soldier. I’ve had some incredible experiences – some good, some bad – and I genuinely feel honoured that people want to hear about them.

We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. He also takes an unflinching look at the resilience, teamwork and leadership skills required by Special Forces, as well as the lessons in dealing with pressure and the aftermath of stressful situations. The 90s were a ‘reasonably quiet’ time for the Marines, but that quiet time made him realise it was the action of soldiering – ‘being like a kid running around in the dirt’ was what Jason enjoyed. In his speeches as in his book Battle Scars: A Story of War and All That Follows, Jason looks at the unique teamwork and resilience that Special Forces training and operations build in those involved. It was a perverse flight of fancy, the human condition testing its resolve for survival in an everyday situation. But with time, like the phases on Selection, my honest self-assessment, while difficult, became doable. I’d come across foxy like maybe a lot of others by watching SAS Who Dares Wins and always love his brutal straight talking attitude and the little clips of his experiences and personal thoughts. Bloody hell, the process still plays on my mind because it was so painful, but if I’d avoided the tough questions I wouldn’t be around today. I was barely able to scratch the surface of the issue by the time my board was full and heavy in the water. And throwing myself into the sea would have been a far more selfish act than breaking away from certain friends and partners. It’s nothing like as tough as I was used to in the Special Forces, but we are still working 24-hour days in extreme environments, pulling together, challenging ourselves.

As a combat veteran, as a senior team leader in the SBS, I’d been in that situation God knows how many times before, but this one, I was petrified. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Jason Fox, for this unforgettable, magnificent and utterly inspiring read. It started really slow, was hard to get used to Foxy's narrating, but after few quick chapters and no distractions this book just gets better and better. I initially wondered if the possibly flamboyant writing of the opening battle scene was somewhat at odds with the tone of all that follows but it didn't put me off and in no time at all I was engrossed. These days, if ever I’m asked for advice, or whenever a new intake at Rock2Recovery has asked me for help, I often use the same line: honesty is everything. Confused as to why he felt like this and concerned that he couldn’t motivate himself, let alone his team, he visited the camp’s mental health nurse.
