About this deal

James has climbed on top of a chair at the front of the room and is waving his hands in a way that’s both ridiculous and dignified at the same time, like a world leader getting off a plane. Friends, Buglers, countrymen, he says in his booming voice, lend me your ears. Immediately, I realize I should’ve thought of this earlier—that part of the reason for Winona’s hesitation might have to do with something bigger than her or her dad. Fortunately, Serena, with surprising nimbleness, seems to understand as well.

Now my forehead really goes to town. Seriously? “Our boy” Leonard just joined the Bugle last year. I don’t know what he’s thinking, pulling this move, but it doesn’t change the very obvious fact that he’s greener than an apple Jolly Rancher. So, this book is about Eliza, who desperately wants to be editor-in-chief of the school paper, but then one day before the election Len shows up to run against her. Eventually Len wins and Eliza, who can't believe that he won fair and square since she is more qualified, cries sexism and so accidentally starts a feminist movement.First of all I am not a feminist. Simply because I don't know enough about it and calling myself one would make me fell like a faker ** cough Eliza cough **, but I think feminism is or should be about supporting women without belittle or judge them for wearing make up or looking a certain way. It also should be about finding a way to work with others to create equality for all, without having to antagonize anything male for literally no reason. The book had really good themes on sexism, misogyny, and feminism and I think it gets the message across even if it isn't exactly the idea of feminism I have. Good idea, not so good execution.

I think I would've liked this book a lot more if she was the main character instead of Eliza, I think I would've agreed more with her views. and Len... I liked how he called out Eliza on her bs and how he didn't let Eliza antagonizing him ruin his reputation, but instead joined the cause. I just wish he wouldn't have resigned. It’s fine. I flip through my binder to find his draft, which I edited last night. His story is about the annual student-council bake sale, which would be a real snoozer even in more capable hands.

It's a great story that perfectly reflects the struggle to understand what you should stand for and what behavior you should call out, especially as a teenager. What does it mean to be a good feminist? Does falling for the guy who made you start this movement make you a bad feminist? I had to wonder, though, was it sexism or was it that Len was more popular? Should being popular be necessary to get ahead? Why is it that the top positions in their school remain so unequivocally male dominated? One of my favourite characters was Dr Guinn, the member of staff that both Eliza and Len manage to successfully talk around to get each other out of detentions. Dr Guinn understands how Eliza is feeling but points out that life isn't always fair. He sets out to get the two working together and as they do, Eliza starts falling for Len. The very last person she should fall for in light of her campaign. Today is the annual Bugler election, in which you will have the opportunity to select your next editor in chief. This is, as you know, a unique tradition among student newspapers, one that our forebears instituted out of a deep respect for the power of democracy. Cherish this privilege to choose who leads you, and vote wisely. As your current fearless leader, I know I leave colossal shoes to fill— I scrunch up my face—one eye squinted, nose wrinkled, tongue lolled out sideways. You don’t think I’m pretty? I joke, trying to talk and hold the expression at the same time. Now my forehead really goes to town. Seriously? Our boy Leonard just joined the Bugle last year. I don’t know what he’s thinking, pulling this move, but it doesn’t change the very obvious fact that he’s greener than an apple Jolly Rancher. The last draft I have belongs to Natalie Weinberg, another sophomore. I scan the room to see if she’s here yet, and I spot her approaching Len’s corner. Which is a little odd. the author makes both so scared to show any emotion that they give off exactly that, no emotion. for example, in this last encounter, why not make him angry? let him be frustrated at her, and let her be affected by that. give them emotion! instead, we get this insipid scene. The fact this nuanced exploration of sexism, feminism, classism and racism is done from an Asian lens just made the book even better. I loved the discussions around the male gaze, double standards of behaviour, and even cultural and generational divides when it comes to beliefs around feminism and the role of women.

PDF / EPUB File Name: Not_Here_to_be_liked_-_Michelle_Quach.pdf, Not_Here_to_be_liked_-_Michelle_Quach.epubWe follow Eliza, a Chinese-Vietnamese-American teen who is the managing editor of her high school newspaper. She's not here to be liked and doesn't need to (spoiler: we like her anyway or maybe because of it). She knows she will be voted as next year's editor in chief, not only because there's no one better for the job, but there's also no one running against her. Until there is. essentially, it's not like by the end of the book eliza is a superhero who shifted how people think and changed the world forever and ever. (i mean, i wish.) in fact, it's interesting how the book is concluded; it's not pessimistic but hopeful and it's exactly what makes this story deeply realistic. it's done extremely well, with excellent execution in my opinion, and i applaud michelle quach for writing this fantastic debut novel. i cannot wait to read more from her! Honestly, Not Here To Be Liked is so excellent I don’t know where to start. Let’s take our main character, Eliza. She’s unapologetically herself. She doesn’t care about being the best dressed, all she cares about is doing a great job with the school paper. All she cares about is what is fair. She might seem a bit selfish and hard to fall for, at first, but damn, I really did. I loved how sharp she was, I loved how complicated she was, too. Her growth through the story was spectacular and while she makes so many mistakes, she learns so much from them, too. I loved Eliza!
