About this deal

I was especially disappointed about the writer's retrospective of previous shooting habits ("All my film shooting was done with slow-ish kit zooms..."). One of the seldom-discussed benefits of this particular lens for portraits is how it does NOT intimidate your subject. An interesting (and included) accessory is the DR-40 Decoration Ring: as Olympus states, the ring ''can be used to conceal surface irregularities on the hood mount at the front of the lens and create a sense of unity and coherence.'' Essentially, the lens hood is optional, and you can cover up the mounting points with a prettier ring that matches the finish of the lens. I start to learn photography and i just bought new Olympus E-PL 1 with lenses, i wonder if i can fit a canon’s micro 4/3 lenses to this Olympus camera.

Not enough lenses. That’s where the NEX 7 falls short. Not to mention, the lenses just feel ridiculous on those cameras….As seen in the photo above, the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 balances nicely on the E-PL2 camera body used for this test.

There are no other functions on the body of this lens such as control buttons, manual focus clutch or a focal distance scale. It’s a very simple design. Wide open the lens is both soft and sharp. The fall off and out of focus areas have a pleasingly soft appearance while the focal plane is nice and sharp. Crisp, great resolving, but not overly clinical. It’s a wonderful balance in my opinion. Close up… kinda… The Olympus 45mm f/1.8 is a member of the brand’s Premium line, as opposed to their Pro line, meaning it isn’t weather-sealed and comes without a lens hood. Distortion is also minimized in this lens, showing just -0.1% pincushion distortion in the corners; this really isn't a lot to write home about. Being small and fast means the camera is easy to work with, doesn’t get tiring to hold, and your subjects don’t pay attention to it. In fact it is very easy for the camera and lens to become virtually invisible. Good gear does that… but the larger the camera the harder to forget about its presence in your hands. This lens disappears. Maternity portrait with a touch of glowThe Olympus 45mm f1.8 is a surprisingly compact lens even for the Micro Four Thirds standard. Measuring 56mm in diameter, 46mm in length and weighing just 116g, it’s beaten only by pancake lenses on size and weight. Indeed it’s only 56mm at the rear end to support the standard Micro Four Thirds lens mount. Beyond the mount, the barrel tapers down to a narrower diameter for the rest of the lens. This thing really is tiny. What we've added is the ability to convey personal impressions of some of the more interesting items that cross our desk. Most people know this is a sharp and useful lens. It has a rendering which is somehow nice and natural. Like my M.Zuiko 40-150 plastic fantastic, this a lens which over-performs optically for its price but which could be better made.

I know this is an older blog post but I wondered if I could ask a question. On an Em-1 would you use the 45mm before the 50mm f2 4/3 lens with an adapter for general shooting. I saw in a previous review that you said the 50 was your favourite lens. Focusing isn't simply fast - it's almost silent, too, courtesy of the Movie & Stills Compatible (MSC) technology employed. This is good news for videographers and anyone who's into unobtrusive and discreet photography. So we were understandably delighted when Olympus announced a lens that fitted this definition almost perfectly. And still more encouraged when we discovered they were asking a fairly sensible amount of money for it. It doesn't have the 12mm F2's beautiful all-metal build and clever manual focus engineering but we'd much prefer a price tag that will see it end up in more people's kit bags. What about the faithful 50s? We just had a baby and I am looking into buying a new lens for my EPL-1….I am not sure if I should buy the panasonic or the 45mm 1.8 ….what would you recommend….I've just been using the standard kit 14-42 lens that came on my Oly EPL1 which obviously isn't all that great, especially indoors. So any info you can give me or a recommendation would be great.
