About this deal

Already 13 albums deep, Gary Numan unveiled Pure in November 2000, a pivotal year in world history even if we all thought its significance was just the passing of one century, and millennium, into the next. We hadn't seen it, but the decade that followed served to bookend modernism itself, landing us in a very different time - post-analogue, post-truth, post-physicality, post-recording industry, and, in many ways, post-human. What better way to mark the transition than with this electro-synth-goth collection? Vinyl release of Gary Numan - Pure (Crystal Clear Vinyl). Released through EARMUSIC and available on 2LP. But there is so much more here. 'Walking With Shadows' slows things down considerably, but is every bit as creepy as it's title. The songs themselves are filled with an almost relentlessly dark and angry outlook, highlighted by some very real then-recent losses in his life. But those details can take a while to decipher, as they initially seem camouflaged within the album's general tone. And while at first it seems that his songs have gotten much more political, his intent probably wasn't really to preach from a soapbox, but rather to project an overall sense of powerlessness. Vinyl.com.au aims to provide up to date images of the products and accurate information. However, product detail may change from time to time and there may be a delay in making updates. Overall though, 'Pure' is a spectacular return to form for an artist that most had written off in the early 80s and forgotten about entirely a few years later. Many of us kept the faith and after many disappointments were rewarded with this absolute gem of an album.

There was a lot of water under the bridge from 1979 to 2000. During that time, Numan released a steady stream of albums, ranging from the rather good ('Telekon', 'Berserker') to the truly appalling ('Warriors', 'Machine & Soul'). Then in the mid-90s, he abandoned his hopeless quest for a hit single and concentrated on what he did best -- making dark, imaginative, angry music. On first listen I gave this album a 3 star rating. I think the album needs to be given time and to listen when you are prepared to cope with an album full of anger and pain. I had to re-appraise as it's well worth at least 4 1/2 stars, and after deliberations I decided it scraped a 5 star. By this time, Numan's style was definitely well-entrenched into the industrial/metal sound that's often associated with artists such as Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, etc. One ironic turn is that for all of history's labeling of his early period as a revolutionary, electronics-based medium (with electric guitars still in the mix), it is 21st century Numan that loads on layer after layer of computer programmed sound (with electric guitars still in the mix). If you're wondering where to go after listening to 'Replicas' and 'The Pleasure Principle', fast forward to 'Pure', an astonishingly good album from a man who, at a stage in his career when most of his contemparies are content to do nostalgia tours, is making some of the most challenging and heartfelt music around. Sacrifice' and 'Exile' were rather messy in the production departments, but certainly had their moments.

You may choose to restrict the collection or use of your personal information in the following ways: The lyrics are vitriolic and full of pain. There are so many outstanding numbers at least 8, the best "A Prayer for the Unborn" which is devastating , closely followed by "My Jesus" , "Pure", "Walking with Shadows", "RIP""One Perfect Lie" ,.. and the heatbreaking "Little Invitro".We require this information to understand your needs and provide you with a better service, and in particular for the following reasons: And that's reflective of the album as a whole which is, given the circumstances surrounding its release, something of a miracle. Lyrically Pure is, in turns, mournful, forlorn and angry. Numan and his partner (wife?) had recently lost a baby and, like many before him, he uses his music to try and lance the hurt. From previous albums it's apparent Numan does not believe in a traditional god but rather a more general form of spiritualism. On Pure he questions how any all-seeing entity could allow such things to happen: "If you are my shepherd then I'm lost and no one can find me. If you are my saviour then I'm dead and no one can help me." ("A Prayer For The Unborn"). And ponders upon the sadistic side to faith: "My Jesus is a collector of pain…. My Jesus is like a shadow crawling. Pain will prove you love me. Their screams will guide you to me" ("My Jesus"). It's harrowing stuff and made more painful by "Little Invitro": "I can't believe that you're gone and we're alone. I can't believe that we'll never see your face."
