About this deal

The game itself is very enjoyable and can be played as tactically as you wish. Myself? I like to try and collect odd cards to spite my opponent, but with a strict hand limit this can be risky. The difficulty is balancing collecting mushrooms and resources such as pans, baskets etc – as one without the other simply won’t win the game. For me though, the beauty of Fungi really is in its simplicity. An easy go-to on a cold, Tuesday night, its theme is strong enough to transport me to a roaring camp-fire with the smell of buttery mushrooms lifting in the air. Place the pair of shoes card at one end. This represents the start of the forest. Now reveal the first eight forest cards and place them in a row directly in front of the shoes and between both players. There is an alternative way of setting up the forest with the cards going in a spiral around the shoes, however, this is the simplest way to do it if you are just learning the game. Here are a few pros and cons of Fungi to help you have a clearer picture of what this game offers. Pros

As in the list of actions seen below, you could take the cards from the Decay pile (provided you meet certain requirements). Once the Decay pile reaches four cards and the next player doesn’t take them on their go, place all of them into the Discard pile. Start a new Decay pile from the last card moved from the Forest. Discard Pile Now, deal three Forest cards to each player, face down. These form your hand at the start of the game and should be kept hidden from the other player. Most cards stay in your hand. However, there are a couple of exceptions. If one of the three is a Basket, put it straight into your Display and don’t draw a replacement. If you have a Moon card, place it in the Discard pile and take one of the Night cards, adding it to your hand. Finally, if you have a Fly agaric, put it straight on the Discard pile, and don’t draw another Forest card. Portable: Fungi is a compact and portable game that can be easily transported, making it ideal for travelling or for playing on the go. Now you are almost set. To finish give each player three overview cards which will help keep everyone right with the actions of the game, and three cards each from the forest draw pile, these will form the player's starting hand. There are a few special cards which if drawn will need to be treated differently. For this action, you will just take one of the first two cards in the forest from where the shoes are and add it to your hand. You can't hold more than eight cards in your hand at once without a basket. If you have three or more of the same type of mushroom and a pan laid down you can cook the mushroom to score flavour points. This is how you score points and win the game. The objective of this game is to match high-scoring mushroom cards with at least three of the same kind. You need to connect three (or more) mushrooms of the same type and put them in your “pan” to score.

If you fancy a beautiful and strategic mushroom foraging trip, Pegasus Press’ Fungi may right up your woodland path. In this neat card game two players compete to collect and cook the most rare and delicious mushrooms they can as they move along a pathway of forest cards representing the route they’re strolling through the wood. The aim of the game is for players to collect “forage points” counters. Points from 2 to 4 are collected by creating clusters, as shown on special mushroom cards. Clusters are made by obtaining the required colours of mushrooms in your foraged card collection. However, you can only make clusters when it’s your turn to forage. The number of points you get depends on the number of mushrooms required for a cluster: for example, 4 mushrooms are required for 4 points, which is the highest-value and most difficult cluster to make. All completed clusters are then put in the discard pile. If a player is the first to reach a total of 10 points, they are the winner. The instructions are reasonably long. Although the game is only 20 to 40 minutes (I’ve found the official estimate to be pretty accurate, in this case), you’ll need half an hour to learn the rules. It’ll also take you a couple of rounds to get used to the tactics. Overall, though, there’s nothing too complicated going on here. Count up the total number of Flavor points simmering in your Pans. Night cards are worth double (as shown on them). Add on the values of any Butter or Cidre you’ve thrown in, too.

Have you ever woken up one morning and wondered whether fungi have feelings...and faces? Fungi have been around for millions of years: they aren’t plants, they aren’t animals, but in this charming, magical card game from Ridley’s Games, Funky Fungi, they’re full of life and personality! What's The Game Like? Put cards straight into your hand unless they’re a Basket, Fly agaric, or Moon, in which case play them immediately. 2. Put a Pan down To score these points players have to collect several varieties of mushrooms trying to score points by cooking sets of the same type into meals with pans and extra flavourings such as cider or butter to score extra points rewarding large numbers of the same variety. What's in the Box? Keep in mind that any night versions of cards count as two and it is possible to use more than one card to score more points such as two butter if you have eight of a type, for example. The extra flavour cards do have to be played at the time of cooking though. 4. Sell Two or More of the Same Type of Mushrooms The game finishes when the last card from the Forest has been taken. It stops immediately. Don’t finish the turn or allow each other one last go. It’s like that moment on a cookery show when the hosts force the contestants to “Stop cooking!”

This was definitely our preferred way to play, although I’d recommend getting used to the rules with the standard method first. An easy go-to on a cold, Tuesday night, its theme is strong enough to transport me to a roaring camp-fire with the smell of buttery mushrooms lifting in the air. According to the official rule book, the player to go first is the last person to have had “mushrooms for dinner”. In my experience, nobody really cares about this. There aren’t many people in the world who can say, “Ah, yes, the last time I ate mushrooms for dinner was the 21st of July, 2019.” It’s a nice touch from the developers, but you’re probably better off tossing a coin or going with the traditional “youngest first” approach. It’s a bit like a thematic, more complicated version of Rummy’s traditional card game. There are more steps, and the rounds take longer, but the concept of combining sets of cards is the overriding goal. Bottom Line Up Front You can’t use anything from the Discard pile. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Some cards (like Moons) go straight to be discarded, bypassing the Decay pile. Special Cards Can be slow-paced: Fungi can be a slow-paced game, especially if players are taking their time to make decisions or if there are many players involved. Bear in mind that Fly agarics also impact your total hand limit, even if only temporarily. Ending the Game Image From Benjamin Kitchen
