About this deal

A number of the poems in the book can be found presented on YouTube, though many are being introduced to the world for the first time here on paper. You may have never heard of Sarah Kay or maybe you have watched every performance in every nook and cranny of the internet. In No Matter the Wreckage , Sarah Kay takes you on a profound journey through her self-discovery in New York. Sarah Kay's spectacular poetry reached me so deeply that I've already passed the book on to my little sister a mere ten minutes after reading it, because I wanted to share the gift of these spectacular and empowering words with her.

No Matter the Wreckage invites readers to revel in both new and beloved works, showcasing Kay's remarkable ability to celebrate the essence of family, love, travel, history, and even peculiar romances between inanimate objects ("Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire") with eloquence and charm. For some I imagine reading the poetry will not compare to watching her present, but I think that that is a limitation of the medium, more than a complaint about the book. Her writing style was simply not my cup of tea, I liked a poem or two, but it didn't has a wow factor or anything and I loathed reading it out loud or even silently *Shocked* because I usually enjoy reading poetry books out loud. Most known for her spoken word poetry and work with Project VOICE, Sarah Kay manages to pull us into her world through her masterful art of painting pictures with letters. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join in on her journey of discovering herself and the world around her.

Poets as such are few and far between, and if this is what Sarah Kay has to offer in her 20’s I cannot begin to imagine what her life long career and future works will be like.

I like the challenge of trying to figure out what that room full of people needs or wants on that particular night. I'm sad to say I didn't really enjoy this poetry collection, specially since everyone who's read this seems to love it.On the whole they have been good with a few outstanding poems but I haven't been left feeling a sense of loss at the end or a sense of longing to read more, much more. What sets No Matter the Wreckage apart is Kay's ability to find magic in the ordinary, painting intimate portraits of unlikely love affairs between objects and exploring whimsical topics.

There are some poems that I felt too intimate for me to be reading, like I was invading her privacy, but that's how Sarah Kay is. She performs with confidence and charisma, which adds that extra bit of voice I found lacking in No Matter the Wreckage. They felt deep, touching, clever, real, conveyed oceans of feeling and resonated with some of my own experiences. Since No Matter the Wreckage includes poetry from a span of ten years of my life, it was inevitable that at some point my family would be included, since there were plenty of times in that decade when I was navigating family dynamics and history.

On the other hand I figured that the accessibility of the poems would make for far more enjoyable reading than most poetry books.

Whether or not you're a big fan of poetry, I absolutely recommend picking this book up, because I can absolutely guarantee that you will fall in love with it. I leave this book with a feeling of how very under rated she is (despite all the love and fame she garners). Following the success of her breakout poem, “B”, Sarah Kay, in collaboration with illustrator Sophia Janowitz, released her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. I didn't know anything about Sarah Kay or her poetry before I met her at the signing for Jonny Sun's book this past June, but once I heard her read her poem "The Paradox," I was immediately enthralled and added her poetry collection, No Matter The Wreckage, to my TBR and my Christmas want list.Kay holds a Masters Degree in The Art of Teaching from Brown University and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Grinnell College. I have been following Sarah Kay since my first year in college (2012) when I first watched her in Ted. On the other hand, the chance to see the poems on paper provided an opportunity to dig into them in a way that listening does not quite offer and even on the poems I had listened to, I noticed components I had not before.
