The 478 indicates that it was given its weights and measures verification in St.Helens and were probably made at the Ravenhead glass factory. The GR is George VI who reigned from 1937-1952 so your glasses range from somewhere between those two dates. It’s unusual that they are dimple mugs though. I have a dimple mug which I think is from George V 1910-1936 and it’s possible yours date from then too. A picture would help, especially of the crown on the weights and measures mark. Are you familiar with dimple mugs made in England and bearing the Ravenhead name without the Ravenhead logo? I have one bearing the post-1968 crown stamp and the 478 St. Helens number. I understand that RayWare used the Ravenhead name and logo after about 2003 or so but that RayWare’s mugs were not made in England. Might there have been a period – perhaps from around 1969 to around1972 – between the time Ravenhead started putting its name on mugs and the time the logo was adopted? But hold on, why are they listed as “Multicolour” when they’re just clear? That’s a mystery for another day, I guess.

Some 15-20 years ago I was happily collecting GR-marked glasses from charity shops for around 50p each but the supply dried up 10 years ago. What happened, did the shops get wise and start selling decent glasses to the antique trade (like everything else)? Cater to everyone’s choicest drinks with our range of glass tumblers. It is increasingly common to find pint glasses which contain markings on the base; very often these glasses are branded to one particular beer. The markings themselves are formed from small pits, which aid in nucleation, allowing the gas within it to be released more easily, thus preserving the head. Without the aid of these pits a regular pint glass will keep a head for only 3 or 4 minutes before appearing "flat". [26] The markings come in a variety of styles ranging from a simple circular or square hatched pattern to more complicated branding messages. In the first five images here, you see the schooner (16 oz) used by Lum’s, the late lamented U.S. burger and hot dog chain: It shows that the dimples were used to help handle the glass (so to speak). I’m wondering now if the English dimpled pint glass was inspired by a pre-Pro version of this American schooner goblet, with retention of dimples but not their function. Hard to say. With so many different styles of pint glass available, it can be as simple as choosing the one you like the look of the most to make an excellent gift. However, if you are buying for someone with a favourite tipple, think about purchasing a pint glass that will make their drink look good. I enjoyed reading through your blog and I’m wondering if you can help me out with a ‘beer’ glass I have. It’s a small 100ml glass in the Nonic shape. Air bubbles, stones, striations, bump on the rim … Really interesting You may be interested in this interview with a pub landlord from the 1890s which has an unusual explanation for the replacement of pots with glasses: Two pints of mild and bitter, served in ten-sided glasses in a North of England pub in 1944, from the film Down at the Local

Hi Martyn, Another nice article, and with some good pictures to boot! The Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, NY) has one of the nicest collections of beer drinking vessels I have seen. Lots of very nice Humpen. Their collection is huge, but only a small bit is available for viewing online. Pint glasses come in a wide variety of different styles. These include the conical ‘sleevers’ style that tapers by about one inch in diameter from rim to base, the Nonic pint glass that has a bulge a couple of inches below the rim, which helps you grip the glass, the jug glass or dimple mug style with a handle, and the tulip style pint glass, which is a more modern design that is taller with a flared rim. A more recent pint glass style mimics that of a standard pint-sized beer can. This pint glass has straight, cylindrical sides with an inverted lip and base. This style is around 40 per cent lighter than a conical style pint glass because it is less prone to tipping, so it doesn’t need to have a heavy base to provide stability. Choosing the right glass gift Many thanks for the instant help, Martyn. So I have GR 10-sided (pint and ½pt), GR dimple pint mug, GR hexagonal facet* mugs, all with ‘478’ (St Helens). I guess they were all made by Ravenhead. Also a GR hex-facet pint mug with ’64’ (Newcastle upon Tyne) and a tapered sleever pint glass GR 221 (Newham). I wonder who made those. The latter is the rarest, I think, and my preference for appreciating Wadworth’s Old Timer. Remember pint glasses are 20 oz and if it is 16 oz, it is not a legal pint glass. In USA, Americans discriminate saying 16 oz ia pint glass pint glass because it is all about money than serving the true original 20 oz as 20 oz is a world wide glass.Customized Pint Glass, Personalized Pint Glass, Gift, Pint Glass Gift, Gifts For Him, Personalized Gift, Housewarming Gift Guide to the main administrative structures required for implementing the ACQUIS" (PDF). European Commission. May 2005 . Retrieved 16 November 2012. The “dimple” pint arrived about 1948 1938, and eventually drove out the “fluted” glass in the handled pint field (although 10-sided pint glasses were still being made as late as 1964): the arrival of the dimple coincided with the triumph of bitter over (dark) mild, and amber beers look better in dimpled glasses than in straight-sides ones: the light shining through a pint of bitter in a dimpled glass is the beery equivalent of the windows of Salisbury or Chartres. Don’t know: I’m sure the evidence is out there in old photographs, brewers’ ads, elderly drinkers reminiscences and the like – anyone want to take on the task of finding out? (No …. I thought not …)

This has been a delight to read this story and to see someone taking care about this subject. People are mainly interested in the precious liquid inside the pint than the pint itself.
