About this deal

No offence is intended to Phil Spector; his sound is perfect for The Crystals and Ike and Tina but not for the Beatles. I Me Mine" – a remixed, slightly different recreation of Spector's edit (which had increased the track's length by copy/pasting the second chorus at the end) of the track recorded on 3 January 1970; orchestra removed, guitar overdubs and organ parts mixed in and out to make the repeated verse sound different.

I mean, what is this album supposed to be exactly – a version of the original album just without the Spectorization? It was obvious that, at times during these sessions (especially after they moved out of the Twickenham movie studio and into their premises in Savile Row - and added Billy Preston, who may have had a calming influence), they actually appeared to get on quite well.Let It Be" – a remix of take 27A from 31 January 1969 used for George Martin's single version and Spector's album version, with edit pieces including Harrison's guitar solo from take 27B edited in. And these mashups sit next to “Two of Us” and “One After 909”, which are the same takes as the original album, just newly remixed – the producers were wildly inconsistent in their philosophy of what they were supposed to be doing with the songs on this release. Not the greatest selection of songs The Beatles ever put together, more of a Beatles for Sale level album than a Revolver level album really, but one with enough classics to deserve its place in The Beatles’ canon. No studio effects or overdubbing of voices or instruments would be allowed - just the bare necessities of the band. First, abandoning the easier path, they opted to learn a completely new batch of songs for the televised concert.

But for some weird reason the producers decided the world needed another version, so we got yet another version with a solo from George Harrison patched in from someplace else. There were several early versions of some Abbey Road songs and what what would later emerge as solo material from J, P and G (Jealous Guy, Back Seat Of My Car, Junk, All Things Must Pass).

The rest of the songs, shorn of Spector's decorative flourishes, confirm that although the Beatles were having occasional difficulty speaking to each other during these sessions, there was no problem about playing together.
