About this deal

Mark Cooper is the co-creator and founding producer of Later… with Jools Holland and the Annual Hootenanny, booking and shaping both for 26 years without missing a single recording. I'm still likely to get a drink or visit the loo when those contributions are playing cos they do nothing for me but at least I appreciate the reason for including these acts now.

The first features relative unknowns who made their TV debuts on the show and went on to great success afterwards. It was another fabulous evening and Mark’s talk was very amusing and insightful, giving us all a window into the way in which ‘Later… ‘ works – or doesn’t sometimes! Cooper co-created Later… with director Janet Fraser Crook, whose idea it was to film the show in the round, itself something of a revolution in studio craft.

Part of what has made the show so special is the format – all those bands, singers, stars and newbies brought together to listen as well as to perform in Jools’ circle of dreams. It’s fascinating to read how the show is put together, including the challenges of juggling different artists on the same show. But theres always been plenty of mayhem alongside the magic of convening a room full of musicians hosted by one of their own. Blige and David Bowie found a regular welcome, alongside the next generation of superstars including Adele, Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse. But there’s always been plenty of mayhem alongside the magic of convening a room full of musicians hosted by one of their own.

Later’s New Year’s Eve spin-off show, Hootenanny, back this year as a big-ticket item for the first time since 2019, came together, like its progenitor, as much by opportunity as by design. Jools Holland had presented the radical musical programme The Tube with the late, great Paula Yates and seemed a natural to present Later…. The director Janet Fraser Cook’s decision was to bring the lights way down, screening out the audience and fellow artists, and concentrating on the performances. Dimbola Museum and Galleries recently hosted a 2nd talk on the exhibition ‘Experience the Isle of Wight Festival 2002 to 2023’ with Mark Cooper, ex-head of music at the BBC, and creator and Producer of ‘Later…with Jools Holland’. Dave Grohl and Alicia Keys loved it, Björk treasured it, Ed Sheeran’s life was changed by it, Kano felt at home while Nick Cave was horrified but inspired, and they all kept coming back.It was a joy to share tales of the likes of Iggy Pop, Seasick Steve and Adele on the studio floor of the legendary Later …with Jools Holland show to a keen crowd at the equally legendary Dimbola. Written by the shows co-creator and 26-year showrunner, music journalist Mark Cooper, this is the story of how Later grew into a musical and TV institution.
