About this deal

The third and smallest circle in this process of wonder is tradition. It is the circle that the others lead man to and that enlivens the other circles with meaning and value. Tradition serves as an object and the medium of the person in his quest for answers within God. In religious contexts, it can be associated with appeals to the authority of the Bible above reason and reasonable love, whether in church communities or in the home. We will look at three pieces of the biblical teaching that, while Christ has two distinct and unchanged natures, he nonetheless remains one Person. Such violence, sometimes horrendously depicted as being tormented with fire, was deemed fair, because God is just and had made the options clear. This is a view many will still defend. Two opposing Christian views of masculinity It is only love, therefore, that directs the person to trust and accept communion with a witness and, in the act of faith, the Witness is God Himself. The Witness says “it is so” and the person, using his will, makes the statement his own and is able to see something which he would never have been able to see through his own abilities and talents. It is this turning of the will that makes the act of faith and allows the person to endure the struggles and trials of living by faith.

The dynamism between the Persons should not be seen as an “effect proceeding from a cause” (this could lead to modalism which denies divinity to the Son) or even as the “cause going to the effect,” as moving it or making its own image upon it, in which case the “persons” of God would only be a mask of a truly singular Person. If, in the first century, women were deemed inferior and lived pregnancy to pregnancy, nearly half of them not surviving beyond the age of thirty, over the past half century effective contraception has helped even the playing field for women to engage in leadership as much as men. Though sadly that is still not the case in many communities including churches. The truth that it is only God the Son who became incarnate is taught, for example, in John 1:14, which says “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” In context, the Word is God the Son (cf. 1:1, 18, and 3:16). Thus, it wasn’t the Father or the Holy Spirit who became man, but God the Son.

Females were failed males, argued Plato, and people often read Genesis in the Bible as saying man was made in God’s image, while woman was made in man’s. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can this kind of faith save him? But what exactly do we mean when we say that God the Son became man? We certainly do not mean that he turned into a man in the sense that he stopped being God and started being man. Jesus did not give up any of his divinity in the incarnation, as is evident from the verses we saw earlier. What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Why did Jesus become man, and why will he be man forever? The book of Hebrews says it was so that Christ could be an adequate Savior who has all that we need. “He had to be made like his brothers in all things, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people” (2:17). In 1 Timothy 6:11-16, Paul gives four commands to Timothy, the man of God, and a motivation to fulfill the commands. From these, we gain five characteristics of the man of God. As we study these, they challenge us to be men and women of God—those identified by their relationship with God, rather than people characterized by this world. Though these truths apply to both sexes, throughout this study, I will primarily use the male designation, man of God, as the text does. What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him?
