About this deal

When the friends are finally reunited they are surprised to find that Quite Big Foot is far from the frightening monster everyone believes him to be and they must find away to help him hide from prying eyes. Riddel's trademark illustrations and imaginative creatures come to life in Ottoline's latest adventure. In Ottoline and the Purple Fox, Ottoline meets a fox that is colored purple. He lives hidden in garbage bin #34. The Purple Fox (at the end of the book we learn that his real name is Peregrine) explains to Ottoline that there is actually a lot of wildlife living in the city. He offers to take Ottoline and Mr. Munroe on an Urban Safari if they will meet him on the corner at midnight. Intrigued, Ottoline accepts and promises to meet him there.

I did like the fact that the foxes could live in such a small and tiny space. It was great fun to see how they decorated, how the inside looked. Like a miniature house. Ottoline lives in a stylish apartment in Big City with a small hairy creature called Mr Munroe. Together they look after the Brown family’s eclectic collections – and dabble in a spot of detective work. So they are the first to the scene of the crime when a string of high-society dog-nappings and jewel thefts hits Big City.

I've been enjoying the Goth Girl YA series by author and illustrator Chris Riddell. I also enjoyed his illustrations in Gregory Maguire's Cress Watercress. So it was with anticipation that I started Ottoline and the Yellow Cat, the first book in his children's series featuring young adventure Ottoline. It consists of 4 books. Ottoline is in the midst of planning a holiday somewhere warm and dry for her and her Mr Munroe, when he mysteriously disappears. Little does she know that he is following a set of strange markings, all the way to his native Norway. Worried about her best friend, Ottoline and the bear who lives in her house decide to take a trip across the seas to find him. In a submarine, plane, and raft, the pair meet adventurers of all types on their trip. It's been three months since I taught this book to my group of second graders and they STILL reference it during discussions of entirely unrelated books! Not only that but they bring in other books from the series and insist I look at visual motifs that have carried through from this book, the first in the series. I was attracted to Chris Riddell's work mainly because of the fascinating illustrations he did for Neil Gaiman. To my delight, I discovered the Ottoline series and this is the first installment I read (and also the 3rd book in the series, I just found out).Ottoline at Sea by Chris Riddell is an adventure fantasy and the last part in a trilogy. Ottoline, the eponymous hero of the book is an eccentric girl who lives in ‘Big City’ with Mr Munroe, a ‘bog person’ that met Ottoline’s parents in a bog in Norway and came to live with them. Ottoline is not an ordinary girl. She loves collecting odd shoes and is a ‘mistress of disguise’. Similarly eccentric, her parents travel the world as professional roving collectors while Ottoline stays at home with Mr Munroe.

Riddellin kertomukset ovat täynnä nonsense ilottelua, juuri sopivan pöhköä lastenkirjoihin. Ottilia asuu Pippurimyllytalon 24. kerroksessa, asunnossa numero 243. Seuranaan hänellä on Mauri-herra, Pieni, karvainen norjalainen suo-otus. Ottilian vanhemmat matkustavat ympäri maailmaa keräämässä mielenkiintoisia esineitä, kuten keisarien hattuja, meteoriitteja, hirveän pieniä maalauksia, naamioita ja erikoisia kelloja. I needed something light with which to start off my morning and Ottoline Goes to School, the 2nd Ottoline YA story, by Chris Riddell was perfect. Ottoline lives in The City, basically on her own, cared for by her companion Mr. Munroe, while her parents are off exploring. She is cared for by a group of people, food preparers, door knob shiners, pillow plumpers, etc. She lives in the Pepperpot building, called thusly because it looks like a pepperpot. Walking home, Ottoline and Mr. Munroe stop at 4th Street books. There they meet another girl who looks remarkably akin to Ottoline. The girl, named Myrrh Treesister, has a hairy friend named Miss Macintosh who is the spitting image of Mr. Munroe. Ottoline decides to invite Myrrh to a dinner party that she is hosting next evening. Es muy fácil seguir la historia porque son pocos los personajes, muy distintos entre sí, humanos, perritos y otros seres fantásticos como el Sr. Munroe, un bichito peludo que odia la lluvia y que le cepillen. Miss Ottoline Brown is an exceptionally inquisitive Mistress of Disguise living in Big City, who also has a diploma from the Who-R-U Academy of Disguise. She can solve any mystery that comes her way, as long as she has her yellow cat assistant by her side at all times, her trusty and faithful Mr Munroe.

Author/Illustrator

A fantastic cosy mystery illustrated series about a young girl and her assistant yellow cat for readers aged 6+ by the only and only award-winning Goth Girl author Chris Riddell. We meet 2 Foxes, a girl who looks like Ottoline (and even has a hairy friend just like Ottoline has), it was just a delight. I was a bit looking forward to some sort of twist though as to why the girl was so similar to Ottoline. But nothing really happens with it, the only thing that happens is that they are both amazed, and keep saying the same sentence.

El estilo que tiene Chris Riddell para narrar el cuento es fantástico, despejado y claro, divertido y muy original, y nunca es el mismo en cada libro. The story line is clearly written and obvious enough for early readers to follow. I think the concept of boarding school and a life where parents are rarely around might be enough to interest some children but the overall story isn't terribly exciting. The illustrations however, are very well done and truly what make the book interesting. Ottilian äiti lähettää tyttärelleen postikortteja matkoilta. Ne päättyvät aina P.S. merkintään, missä äiti antaa Ottilialle tai Mauri-herralle ajankohtaisia vinkkejä mm. asunnon siivoamisesta. Jälkikirjoitusten perusteella hän tuntuu tietävän koko ajan, mitä Ottilia puuhailee, vaikka onkin toisella puolella maailmaa. Chris Riddell on tullut tutuksi Ada Gootti lastenkirjoistaan. Osasinkin siis varautua tarttuessani Ottilia ja keltainen kissa -romaaniin hupaisaan tarinaan ja ihastuttavaan kuvitukseen. Mustavalkoisen kuvituksen yllättävänä väripiristeenä on punaista. I have been looking forward to a new Ottoline book for some time, so imagine my delight when my wish came true! 6 years after the last one a new book has arrived. This time it is all about Ottoline's party, and the new friends she makes while planning for it.Chris has been honoured with an OBE in recognition of his illustration and charity work.Chris lives in Brighton with his family. It's a short, fun story with neat little references to the Beatles for the adults. Ottoline lives in an apartment in the Pepperpot Building. Her parents are explorers and rarely home, communicating with Ottoline by post card. (remember them?). Her constant companion is Mr. Munroe, a friendly troll. Their parents found Mr. Munroe during one of their trips to Norway. When Ottoline realises that Mr Munroe has left, she becomes very upset, and determines to go and find him, along with her assistant, the bear. Their adventure includes trips on a submarine, a seaplane and a Polynesian raft. The book is filled with countless adventures with a surprising ending.
