About this deal

I was inspired to write a simple rhyming puppet story along with a very simple pentatonic song to accompany it. I include patterns for making the turtles and some suggestions for staging the story for different ages and settings. The story is broken into pieces for children from toddler to kindergarten ages, the beginning verse could be used as a complete story for the youngest toddlers and the song sung as an introduction and ending, the following verses could be added for the nursery child, a new verse each day. The entire story could be given as a whole to the older kindergartener. As such, it is a story to grow with. I threw that shoe across the room and broke a lamp. My mom sure was upset.

The "turtle technique" is a method for calming down when you feel angry, frustrated or upset. It has been found to be effective for both children and adults. [ 1]Go into your “shell”. Take three deep breaths and think calming thoughts, such as: “I can calm down,” “I am OK”, “I can think of solutions to my problem,” “I am good at solving problems.” Children can also think about relaxing your body one body part at a time. It was “the punk turtle” – an eccentric and yet strangely human-looking reptile with a vivid green mohican, fleshy “fingers” under its chin and the ability to breathe through its genitals. The Mary River turtle went viral in April when pictures of the hitherto little-known creature were shared around the world after it was placed 30th on the Zoological Society of London’s Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered list for reptiles. The rating, which guides conservation prioritiesfor at-risk species, was compiled by Rikki Gumbs. He says that turtle fascination “went absolutely crazy” after its publication, as he fielded calls from journalists around the world. Reptiles are often overlooked but the connection many felt for the animal does not surprise Gumbs. “It’s the least these amazing reptiles deserve,” he says. “Once people can see how incredible and unique they are, it’s not surprising they are drawn to them.” To clean product, use soft cloth, soap, and warm water to remove dirt then wipe with clean, moist cloth For preschool audiences, the story could be simply staged as a table puppet story, using a small table or play stand covered in cloths. Include areas for the sandy beach, shoreline and the deep, blue sea with the green cloth “sea grass” to hide behind. Use a turtle puppet (or any similar plush toy) to help teach children how to use the turtle technique to calm down. Introduce the turtle puppet to the children. Have the children come up with a name for the turtle. The turtle can bring up an example of a time he got really upset or angry. Have the turtle ask the children if they have ever felt this way. Then the turtle can explain that he has a special way to calm down when he feels angry, called the turtle technique.

Gumbs welcomes the Hollywood treatment for such “underdog species”, but the punk turtle’s surge into the spotlight has not substantially changed its fortunes. “Despite all of this great media attention, there’s been no real action from the Australian government to change anything yet, which is a real shame,” he says. Staging for the youngest audience could be as a simple lap story. A blue cloth draped over the storyteller indicates the deep, blue sea. A green cloth suggests the sea grass where the turtle will swim to hide. The hand gesture is done mainly with the wrist turning from side to side. Slowly allow the forearm to sway slightly outward, pause, then inward, indicating a drifting motion, as if the turtle is being carried by an invisible, waving current. Older children could even stage the story themselves, making it as elaborate as their imaginations, to present to classmates or to an invited audience, this is a beautiful benefit of having a story grow with the child over time.

The four turtles are Leonardo (Leo), Raphael (Raph), Michelangelo (Mikey), and Donatello (Donnie). They were raised by their adoptive father and sensei, Master Splinter.
