What makes range extenders so attractive compared with a bespoke mesh system is that they are easy to install and inexpensive. When paired with a budget-priced router, you can build a tandem system with coverage that rivals what you'd get from a single high-priced router or mesh network. Range extenders come in various shapes, sizes, and speeds, but they do have their limitations; they are typically half as fast as your primary router, and they create a separate extended network that makes seamless roaming difficult.
On the face of it, it’s business as usual. Setup is no different to the other mesh networks I’ve already described and the app is easy to use and offers you a lot of control over your WiFi. While fairly easy to configure, range extenders have their limitations. They often use a separate network SSID that you have to log into as you move through the house, and Wi-Fi speeds are typically half of what you get from your main router. Most dual-band extenders use both radio bands to transmit data to and from the router, which means devices connecting to the extender are competing for bandwidth with the router. To help alleviate network congestion, some manufacturers let you dedicate a band for router-to-extender communications. Netgear's Fastlane technology and Amped Wireless' BoostBand technology are good examples. However, the design isn’t great. The nodes are much bigger than Google’s cylinders or TP Link Deco’s disks. The light is also a lot brighter than the others. You can change this in the settings, but it’s annoying that it comes as default. It illuminated my bedroom to a point where I feared it would harm my chances of getting to sleep. (Admittedly, I’m someone who requires total darkness to nod off.) I also noticed that the connection between the nodes very occasionally flagged when I was walking from one part of the house to another. It only took a second to connect from one node to the next, but it wasn’t something I noted with any of the other devices.
Router: The box that your internet signal comes out of. Usually you’ll get a router installed when you sign up to a certain internet service provider. Sometimes brands call these devices ‘hubs’. Also, I found the range on each individual node left something to be desired compared to the competitors.
ISP: Short for internet service provider. This is the person you pay (usually monthly) to deliver internet to your home. In the UK, brands like BT, Virgin, and Sky Broadband. Moreover, nearly all manufacturers offer web-based setup wizards and illustrated instructions that will help you configure basic wireless settings. Some (but not all) extenders are equipped with LED status indicators that tell you if the extender is too far from the router. Extenders can also offer advanced router-like features such as guest networking, access scheduling, and media server capabilities.We test mesh Wi-Fi systems by setting them up just as you would in a regular home. The primary unit is connected directly to an incoming fibre broadband line, while the second is located according to the manufacturer’s recommendations – normally one or two rooms away. If there’s a third node, this will be placed in another room, creating either a star or daisy-chain topology. Ensure that the light corresponding to the LAN port where the Ethernet cable is connected to is lit. If it is lit, you may proceed with the next procedure. Otherwise, try to connect your computer to another yellow LAN port or change another Ethernet cable. Every Wi-Fi extender we review goes through extensive hands-on testing. Each unit is installed in a real home, at an appropriate distance from the main Wi-Fi router according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If it’s a powerline system, we connect the base unit to the main router via gigabit Ethernet and, again, situate the remote unit according to the instructions. The downside of these speeds is that they involve a design that looks more like a small router with a separate power supply. However, this gives you more flexibility than a plug-in unit, helping you to get a better signal, while you can also use this repeater as a Wi-Fi access point. And, just like the Repeater 3000, it’s as simple as anything to set up. The WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 will be overkill for many people, but if you must get a high-speed connection to a distant corner of the house, nothing else out there comes close. Note: Before proceeding with the solutions in this article, ensure that your Internet connection is active by plugging the Internet cable, which may come from your modem, directly into your computer.
