Up next is the Garland made using Warninks, amontillado sherry, spiced rum, topped with ginger ale, and garnished with candied ginger. Advocaat, along with notes of raisin and nut from the rum and the sherry, creates a Christmas pudding flavour with added ginger ale for that underlying spice – it’s Christmas cake in a glass. If you fancy tweaking a snowball, Charles suggests using cloudy lemonade and garnishing with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to create a Posh Snowball drink or adding mini meringue or Custard Cream on the side. Eggnog rather died out in the old country perhaps because we had the Snowball, which is thought to have been invented some time in the 1940s. It was in the ‘70s, however, that the Snowball reached its apotheosis only to become something of a national embarrassment. This might be because so many people of a certain age began their drinking experiences with an illicit Snowball or two. After all it is essentially boozy custard, much easier on a youthful palate than wine or beer. Once you’ve opened it, it’s important to finish the bottle within six months – but that shouldn’t be too difficult! What Foods Pair Well With Advocaat? You can also make these in a highball glass or a tall glass with lots of ice cubes, but I prefer Martini glasses so that’s my choice! What ingredients go into a Snowball

One of the best selling amaretto brands is Disaronno Originale Amaretto, available at many grocery and liquor stores. A snowball couldn’t be any easier to make – there are only three components. You may stir it straight in your glass, without the need for shaking, muddling, layering, or other complicated procedures.

The Dutch word vla, which is similar to the English word fla, means both “custard” and “eggnog.” The addition of advocaat gives it an eggnog-like flavor while providing a twist on American eggnog. But for my first Snowball I thought I thought should keep it trad. Though to be properly 1970s, I should have used R White’s Lemonade and omitted the lime juice. I don’t think I saw a lime in Britain until about 1991. And the result? Well, it’s absolutely delicious. In fact, Warninks advocaat neat is pretty damn tasty. Make sure you keep it refrigerated as people in the office have shared lurid stories of what happens to an open bottle of advocaat left in a warm cupboard. Think of the eggs, people. How to make a SnowballAs we said, you need Advocaat or it’s not a Snowball. Then it’s super important that you use a good quality lemonade or lemon-lime soda. It’s a pretty rich drink, so you will also need fresh lime juice to cut the intense sweetness. Now, however, advocaat is usually made with only egg yolks, resulting in a darker yellow or mustard-like color than you would get if you used whole eggs. Modern recipes also cook it like custard due to worries about handling raw eggs. Pour in most of the lemonade; stir again — the mixture will foam up a bit; and top with a little more ice and the rest of the lemonade. Advocaat is not to be confused with Eggnog, another popular Christmas drink which has milk, cream and rum in it (as well as the eggs and sugar).

We always go and choose a Christmas tree together, there are the inevitable squabbles about which tree to choose, the tallest, the fattest, the thinnest, a Noble, or perhaps a Blue Spruce. Eventually we decide and it’s usually too big to get home ourselves so we then have to wait for it to be delivered Shake Warninks and freshly squeezed lime juice or cordial together with ice. Strain into a coupe or martini glass and top up with lemonade or soda. Garnish with Christmas foliage or mini meringues for a touch of class! These drinks are slightly sweet, creamy, with just a bit of bubble from the carbonation. Combined with the foam on top you are left with a perfectly divine treat! To imitate the avocado, the Dutch tried using egg yolks. The term advocaat refers to both a lawyer and an avocado in Dutch. In contrast, advocaatpeer is the Dutch word for avocado. If you are looking for a fun new drink for your holiday parties or new family traditions this is a great one to try.

Though avocaat gets its creaminess from egg yolks, the Dutch may have created it to mimic a drink the early explorers discovered while traveling in the Caribbean that used avocados, according to Culinary Lore. Pour the Luxardo liqueur over the cherries to cover; seal; and place in the fridge for at least a week before using. This will yield ½ cup of cherries. However, the liqueur is high in alcohol at around 40% ABV, which should prevent further bacterial growth and studies show that raw egg eggnogs are safe, especially if aged since all salmonella is destroyed after a while. Allow the advocaat to age before eating to eliminate any concerns about food poisoning caused by uncooked eggs. To get the most taste and benefit, use top-quality eggs. To complete the famous drink you add cold lemonade, lime juice or lime cordial to the Advocaat and include ice and a maraschino cherry as a garnish.

If that sounds familiar, that’s because many eggnog recipes have similar ingredients. Some advocaat blends include honey, evaporated milk or cream. (If you can’t find a bottle of avocaat at the store, you can make it yourself and tweak the recipe to your tastes.) Anyway, here’s the classic recipe. The big thing that sets this Advocaat snowball apart (traditional vs Dad’s way) is the fact that my Dad uses a blender to blend them up with crushed ice.Advocaat is a traditional Dutch liqueur made from a mixture of egg yolks, vanilla, sugar and alcohol, (the leading brand, Warninks, is part of the mighty De Kuyper group). It’s essentially boozy custard and who doesn’t like boozy custard? The combination of eggs and booze is an ancient one. There are many old English recipes for drinks like possets and flips involving alcohol, spices, milk or cream and eggs. Some of these would have been heated with a red hot poker. An ale treated as such was said to be ‘nogged’ which is one possible derivation of the word eggnog. Though it might have come from England, the Americans really took to nogging in a big way. David A. Embury in The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks has a whole subchapter on ‘nogs’; there are many different kinds but all contain eggs, alcohol or some sort, milk and/or cream and sugar, lots and lots of sugar. So not that different to advocaat. Incidentally, the word probably comes from the Dutch for lawyer. But I won’t lie, I know a few other fun and creative boozy drink ideas that you can serve along side the Snowball, to spice up your holiday get-togethers.
