About this deal

There’s plenty of Warhammer enthusiasts, like Henry Cavill, who enjoy the painting aspect of the hobby more than the competitive play. Some even make a career out if it, such as Angel Giraldez, who is renowned as one of the best painters in the fandom. The person buying this maybe wants a wee bit more than the Recruit Edition is offering, but doesn’t want to sink the kind of money required for the Command Edition. Finally “ Command Edition” is the new flagship of the range. Which makes me wonder why Elite Edition has that name. I thought the definition of Elite was something “that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society”. But now there is a version which is more superior than Elite… Games Workshop is always getting better at bringing dynamism to push-fit models and are finding more ingenious ways to conceal and/or limit mould lines. Soul Wars was a massive leap forward for push-fit. The Indomitus era is a bit mixed.

Weighing in with 27 models, it’s nowhere near as many as Indomitus, which was bursting at the seams with a staggering 61, but does come with more – and different – figures to the Recruit Edition. The Command Edition does, however, contain exactly the same models as the Elite Edition, so if you’re only after one of these sets for the figures – which, it is worth noting, include the awesome Primaris Captain and Necron Overlord first released with Indomitus – you might want to save yourself a few bob and grab the Elite Edition. Though it leaves me wondering, what about all of those other awesome Models we got in the Indomitus Set? Sprues G & H which have some awesome models like the Judiciar, the Chaplain and the Skorpekh Lord? Those moulds can’t have been used purely for Indomitus right? The core manual recommends you assemble the Necrons with the Gauss Flayer, as the missions are more or less designed with that weapons range in mind. I personally chose to assemble them this way for the diversity in models. The set comes with a transfer sheet for the more iconic Space Marine chapters – Space Marines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Space Wolves – which is a standard now for all Space Marine kits. Once you’ve had a game and made some friends, you might then choose to commit to a slow grow support group, where you can slowly build up armies in a supportive and organised way. You’re bound to make some mistakes when painting your first few models but sharing your mistakes with others, and learning from what they’ve done, is the best way to get some experience.

Their sculpts are gorgeous, their looks are spectacularly unique, and they exude some real presence. That the Command Edition comes with the Primaris Captain is a great feature – condemning those wonderfully unique models to Indomitus alone would have been a travesty. For beginners looking to jump in with both feet, the Elite Edition has what you need. The forces inside the box are bigger, meaning your games will be even more epic, and whether you fancy Space Marines or Necrons, it’s the start of a mighty army. Again, you get the same game mat, dice, measurers and rules you need to stride into the greatest hobby ever.* Even though it’s designed to be a concentrated version of the Core Book, I was a little disappointed to see the size of The Rules book. As one of the things designed to set this box apart from the other editions, it really doesn’t have the gravitas I was hoping. The Games Workshop product picture, shown above, will have you believe the rulebook is as large as, if not larger than, the Command Manual. It definitely isn’t. Amber – These areas are on larger and often curved surfaces, and will require some clean up afterwards such as a hobby knife shave and then a gentle sand Green – Easy, barely an inconvenience. Normally these areas can be cut right up close, as most will be hidden from view anyway (like base pegs), or they are parts which are against flat parts of the model so may just need slight sand, file or hobby knife shave to stay flat.

Thirdly, each increment has arrows on its edge indicating exactly where your model stops depending on how far it can move and is designed to be lain in front of the model to illustrate exactly how movement functions in Warhammer 40,000. I'm a proud Papa to 3 little kiddos. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, served 2010 to 2018. I've been in the hobby for nearly two years, but I've found an awesome little niche and I absolutely love painting commissions and getting to know all of the amazing people in the hobby! I’ve always wondered what use motorcycle-mounted guns would be on a battlefield. Imagine trying to operate a bike, a pair of mounted guns, and wield a chainsword at the same time, all the while making sure to praise the Emperor of Mankind with each filthy Xenos you cut down. Talk about multi-tasking. But after putting these guys together, I get it.

Before we get into the details, it’s important to note that these sets are designed for new players wanting to dip their toe into 40k. If you’re a well-established 40k player you probably won’t see anything here that really gets you going. On the flip side, if you only got your hands on a single Indomitus box and want to branch out with more new Necron/ Primaris sculpts, this might be a more affordable alternative. Recruit Edition Sure, the paper mat might be flimsy, or the dice might be cheap, but realistically, you will be able to play time and time again before you need to replace them. Please note we are counting the connected models as one sprue, for Example, the Lieutenant and the Royal Warden is one Sprue as they come joined. The term “Model” refers to any unit with its own base. Want to build and paint your models too? Course you do! Enter the Warhammer 40,000 Paints + Tools Set. This beauty has plastic cutters for clipping your models safely off the frame, a mould-line scraper, a brush and all the paints you need to get started with both forces in your chosen boxed game. Fill your boots! These datasheets – as they’re referred to in Warhammer 40,000 – contain the stats and profiles for all the units in the set and a wee bit ( YOUR SCOTLAND IS SHOWING ;) – Editor) of fluff explaining what they are and what they do in their respective armies. More experienced players will notice that many of the abilities these units usually have are conspicuously absent. This is very much deliberate and will be explained further on. A heavyweight paper gaming mat , plus a gloss-finished cardboard tray that can be used to provide scenery for your first battles – transform any kitchen table into an appropriately grim, dark warscape! The gaming board also displays several lettered markers designed to work alongside the missions in the Command Manual.

Command Edition Starter Set Review Warhammer 40,000 Command Edition Starter Set Review

Whilst both the Elite and Recruit Editions match the Command Edition with range rulers and dice, datasheets, and the transfer sheet, the Command Edition includes a swish, hard-wearing gaming board (unlike the Recruit and Elite edition peasants who have to make do with a paper mat) and enough push-fit terrain to make your living room look as if it’s just been hit by an Exorcist Launcher. The Skorpekh Destroyers are one of those units that left geeks everywhere drooling. They’re tyrannical, blade-wielding tripods, scuttling to and fro across the battlefield, ravaging your foe’s battleline and leaving arcing webs of blood and gore in their wake. One side is the red crusted earth pattern often attributed to the barren landscape of Mars. The other side bears the non-living mechanical aspect of a Necron Tomb World. These Bladeguard Vets were spotted earliersparking controversy on if a new multipart kit coming just around the corner. Well, it looks like it was all correct. GW came out saying that these guys would be available with different poses very soon. They’re also very easy to get off the sprue given both how large the individual parts are and that there are lots of flat edges for the terrain components to be gated along. The push-fit parts work well as well and feel as if they are holding firmly – though, of course, you may want to glue them anyway if you prefer. The ghoulish and spindly – and also concerningly fragile-looking – Necron Warriors await, along with their Canoptek Scarabs. Necron Warriors
