About this deal

Begins nicely on the palate, with the mellow sweetness of pear, peach and candied citrus skins. White floral aromas of jasmine and rose soon appear to delight. Finishes with smooth, creamy notes and the freshness citrusy/mintiness of lemongrass. Peru’s Tacama, in the Valle de Ica, lays claim to being the oldest vineyard in South America. This acholado blends a number of grape varieties, including Quebranta, Albilla and Italia, resulting in a rounded, almost-creamy spirit with lime zest and icing sugar, and deeper notes of spiced pear. Alc 40% We say: The pisco punch is very fruity and slightly on the sweet side but is so tasty that it justifies its legendary reputation. Acholado, which translates as 'half-breeded, is made from a blend of must from several varieties of grape. Peru's pisco regions

Mosto Verde Quebranta Pisco is made using the Quebranta grape, which is the strongest of all pisco grape varietals. 10 kilos of Quebranta grapes are used to produce a single 1-litre bottle of this premium pisco. Presented in an eye-catching art-deco looking bottle with the company logo proudly embossed on the glass. Very high-class looking. Summary Presented in what feels to me to be a prohibition-style bottle with offset green label with the phrase “El Gobernador”, (meaning “the Governor” in Spanish) proudly displayed on the front. Summary Begins with zesty crisp citrus, grape and delicious green apple. You are soon greeted with delicious notes of vanilla, rose and sweet plum. The finish is clean, yet slightly bitter.

TASTE

A 100% Muscat of Alexandria pisco made in Chile’s Elqui Valley by the Aguirre family. There’s wonderful purity of fruit here, with grainy pear and peach joined by sweet spice and lifted by some lime peel towards the finish. Alc 40% Having won many awards, El Gobernador is Juan Toress’ famous Chilean Pisco which is made with a single process of discontinuation distillation in a copper pot still. It is filled with diverse characters and is a versatile spirit in its portfolio. The Pisco has lush floral aromas with tinges of roses, jasmine, and candied citrus skins. On the palate, it is sweet, round, and creamy and ends with a long, persistent finish. Waqar is a family-owned distillery that has been handed down from father to son for over 5 generations. I think it’s fair to say that pisco production is in their DNA.

We say: Cognac and pisco brandies with maraschino and pineapple adding fruity tropical freshness and a foamy head.First Impression: Very wine grape almost burgundy or Pinot Noir smelling, hint of grapefruit, savory notes on nosing. Like all liquors, pisco does not need to be refrigerated once opened, so long as the bottles do not exceed room temperature (around 75 degrees Fahrenheit).

Still, there are big challenges, not least because educating the consumer is difficult with such confusion in the labelling of the category. Eric Zandona, Author of The Tequila Dictionary and Director of Spirits Information at the ADI shared some of his insight with me. “Pisco can be a really beautiful spirit when it’s done well, but one of its biggest challenges in terms of broader acceptance is the fact that Peruvian and Chileans fight over who gets to call it pisco.” As Peruvian pisco production increased so more grape varieties were used, each producing a spirit with a different flavour and aroma. As exports of Pisco increased so there was a move to establish production standards and regulate what grape varieties could be used for Pisco production. As a result eight different grape varieties are designated for Pisco production in Peru, and depending on the grape's character these are classified as non-aromatic and aromatic. The non-aromatic tend to be the favoured style in Peru but bartenders in export markets tend to prefer the aromatic varieties. Unsurprisingly, there are many other ways to enjoy this versatile spirit. ‘There are few things better than a refreshing Pisco Tonic on a hot summer evening,’ says Coya’s Bacsi. There’s a reason why Caravedo is the #1 exported pisco to the United States—they’re tasty, they’re affordable, and their quality is always consistent. Caravedo’s acholado is produced from an estate-grown blend of quebranta and torontel grapes, followed by nine months of resting prior to bottling. Over seven pounds of grapes are used to produce each bottle of this floral pisco, and no additional water—or any additives, for that matter—are used. The resulting distillate is fresh and vibrant, marked by flavors of raisins, orange peel, green banana, and jasmine. Presented in a rather grand looking clear bottle with the company logo embossed on the glass. Would make an excellent gift. SummaryEach type of liquor has its own set of regulations, which is how we get so many unique tasting spirits. Ingredients You Need
