The distillery, which has won several awards for its artisan spirits, aims to become a destination for gin enthusiasts and tourists, putting York on the British gin drinker’s map by offering daily distillery tours, weekly gin tasting events and catering for private parties, corporate hospitality and business networking groups. Everything that comes after 90 degrees, we throw away and that's how we get really, really, really pure spirits. Sarah and I went to Malton Food Festival and that’s how we began looking into the chemistry of distilling. New external signage has been submitted in the planning proposal which will display the venue’s name, incorporating Hooting Owl and Manchester-based Curious Cat Distillery, a major shareholder in the proposed venture.

Needed a gift urgently so rang to see about collecting a bottle of East Riding gin and Dom kindly offered to deliver it for me. Our core range of six branded Hooting Owl gins includes four Yorkshire branded products, as well as our signature gin and one for my brotherhood in the forces. We recommend a high-quality, plain tonic as we believe the flavour of the gin should be predominant. The rise in popularity of gin during the past decade has seen an explosion in new distilleries in Yorkshire with Hooting Owl now one of more than 25 throughout the county.It’s great solo (on the rocks) or mixing with tonic waters, lemonades or using it as a base for cocktails. The taste explosion starts with Juniper, followed by the citrus notes of the bitter orange and grapefruit, the earthiness of the mountain ash all complimented by the sweetness of the liquorice and cassia bark with a spicy finish thanks to the cubeb and grains of paradise. We use a single pot distillation mehod, which we add all our botanicals and alcohol into with a 12 hour steep. Carefully sweetened with liquorice (Pontefract Cakes) and cassia bark, this precisely weighed botanical mix, combined with the lovingly accurate way in which we distil our craft gins, makes for a very smooth, flavour-packed ‘spiced’ gin.
