About this deal

Moving to music encourages brain development, vocabulary growth, social skills, and stress regulation in children. Affectionately known as ‘The American Poet Laureate of Nonsense’, Dr Seuss, born Theodor Geisel, might not have been a real doctor, but he was a thoroughly authentic and original author who understood his young audience and produced book after book that they adored.

In each episode, kids will hear original music, especially curated by the musical guest. Featured musicians might play anything from familiar classical riffs to witty musical improvisations and funny sound effects – moving the story along at a lively pace. Each episode also includes an educational segment that features fun facts about the highlighted instrument. It also offers the opportunity to consolidate known language, extend and enrich language and support children’s wider development of oral language including using adjectives to create expanded noun phrases. Children can explore and investigate concepts from the text as part of continuous provision, supported by a well-resourced environment with access to name cards, instruments, small world play, role play and art. How could you record your ideas so that you don’t forget them? In writing, in pictures, as audio recordings, with labelled diagrams or a mixture of everything? Is it difficult to think of ideas while you’re sitting still? Where and how might you have better ideas? Turn on the music and tell children they must “dance” only with the body parts you specify. They might wiggle their fingers, swing their right legs, or twirl their left arms. 9. Feather DancingTalk about ideas and where they come from. Like Dr Seuss and the Cat, put your hats on and dream up some new ideas (questions you’d like answered, ideas for stories or pictures, inventions that solve a problem, new ways of doing things).

They call upon their memories and past experiences each time they meet a new opportunity for movement and song. Problem Solving There are a wide variety of benefits of teaching music to preschoolers, that are then combined with movements. You can expect to see positive gains in the following areas: Social Skills Each child begins with a craft feather. Play music, fast or slow, while kids attempt to keep the feathers in the air by blowing on them. 10. Alphabet Sounds and Actions Combining music and movement should start early, as infants develop beyond the lullaby stage into toddlerhood.

Music and movement activities often involve group participation. Because of this, a sense of belonging is often an outcome of taking part. Listening to and singing songs often involves pre-reading skills such as rhyming, repetition, storytelling and voice/body expression. HarperCollins has just reissued four of his best-known and most playful texts in handsome new editions, but Seuss wrote more than 60 titles in total, many of which are still in print. His ability to manipulate a limited vocabulary and turn it into riotously joyful text led to success in the ‘beginner reader’ market, but Seuss wasn’t just interested in teaching children to read, he wanted to teach them to think. In music and movement, children learn to predict what happens next. Balance, Coordination, and Rhythm Available online, this picture book Tanka Tanka Skunk! encourages kids to tap out syllables, and there’s a refrain in which they can join in.

This is a cute Raffi song for which kids join in to sing and take part in the movements. They shake, clap, jump, and finally yawn. This song is also available as a picture book. 24. Move to the BeatKids learn to listen for changes in musical pitch (high/low) and tempo (slow/fast) while taking part in music and movement. The Ish in One Fish Two Fish has a magic dish Make some ‘big swish swishes’ over a suitably magical-looking dish and dream up some wishes of your own. Draw and write about what happens next. Cross-curricular opportunities Kids practise sounds of the letters of the alphabet along with Dr. Jean. Singing along, they use their bodies to show the actions, such as cutting, digging and hopping. 11. Musical Letters
