In Splendor you are a gem dealer collecting various Gems to buy permanent Gem cards. Collect enough of the right kind of Gem cards and you might attract a visit from a local Noble. Once you exceed 15 prestige (victory points) the game ends and the player with the most points wins. Fast forward to the end of 2017 and Space Cowboys announced an expansion set for the base game. You MUST take up to 3 tokens in a line from the board (excluding gold – if there’s a gold, it interrupts the line so you can only take the token(s) up to the gold one). You must keep the tokens you have and the Jewel cards you have visible to your opponent (except reserved cards – see below). For example, if a noble card requires 3 diamond DCs and 3 sapphire DCs, and a player meets the demands, in their turn, the noble will ‘pay the player a visit’ or the player can own that Noble. If you are a fan of the original Splendor, then you will feel right at home as many of the rules are the same and you’ll be playing in seconds. In terms of differences to the original game, you will find that the end game is slightly altered, with players requiring one of each of the colours of gem as well as a Tier 3 card. This is in addition to the 16 VP required. If you are the last player in a round, then triggering the game end immediately finishes the game, and you win! But if you are not the last player, the round continues so that all players have played an equal number of turns, giving them a chance to scrape ahead. So it is always best to try to get close to 15 prestige (ie. 14), then aim to buy the highest value development card you can (especially if it also attracts a noble), rather than triggering the end of the game on exactly 15 prestige.
