The author better wrap up this series nicely and soon, because I am having flashbacks from the whole Zodiac Academy debacle here (if you made it to book 8 of the ZA series, you probably know what I’m talking about)… She keeps adding books to her series, and I am not sure I’m liking it, even though I love the series as a whole and the characters. It's a strange time to release what is essentially a recap view, but if you are familiar with the fandom, you may be aware of the backlash after the release of The War of Two Queens. If you have any desire to continue reading this series, you have to at least read the ending chapter of this book because there is a major thing that happens to one of the main characters.

The characters are going to be separated for a long period of time with different things happening in each of their locations. Other than that, we got a moment where Malik and Cas hash out their feelings before coming to an understanding. To answer your next question: yes, this reads like its own independent story with brief present day interludes.

If you're back here thinking 'maybe I should give this a chance', just go read some reviews and get spoiled the ending/cliffhanger. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. Granted, Delano and Kieran were in the room watching over Poppy after Cas admitted what was happening. Yes, it's a retelling of book 1 from Casteel's POV, but there are a ton of new scenes in it too that are worth reading, in my opinion.
