About this deal

Enjoy the subtlest nuances of studio-quality sound in higher-than-CD quality with High-Resolution Audio. Passion for music unites every component from signal to speaker, so it feels like the artist is performing right in front of you. AB31, AB32, AB33, AB34, AB35, AB36, AB37, AB38, AB41, AB42, AB43, AB44, AB45, AB46, AB47, AB48, AB49, AB50, AB51, AB52, AB53, AB54, AB55, AB56 Stereo receivers are very easy to come by as it turns out. So easy to come by that I had to sift through results to figure out which would connect to my old Panasonic speakers as well as to my middle-of-the-line record player. And I didn’t want the price to stop me from making rent. There were some wrinkles with the HDMI equipment I used. Specifically, neither of my Beyonwiz PVRs would work with the HDMI input labelled BD/DVD. Both worked perfectly with the Game and Media Box inputs. The Beyonwiz T4 also worked with the SAT/CATV input, but while the picture came through from the T3 on that one, the sound wouldn’t. I tried different HDMI cables. Who knows what was going on there. The BD/DVD input worked fine with the Sony disc player (above) and my own selection of UHD and Blu-ray players. A useful button on the remote displays video and audio signal information on the screen, so you’ve got some information to work with. I did not like the volume button because it feels very stiff. Unless you have to, it would be best to just leave it and use the remote control.

So, the Marantz amp has an output of 45 WPC and the RMS of my speakers is 50 W per speaker so, if my hearing could stand it, I could theoretically have the amp running at full volume and the speakers would comfortably handle the power. Further, much of the networking stuff may be duplicated in your TV — especially given that Sony’s own models (such as our award-winning KD65-A1 OLED) favour the Android interface which is absolutely born to network. We didn’t have the A1 to hand, but for Netflix I used the Netflix app on an LG OLED TV and had it deliver the sound to the Sony receiver via the HDMI cable using the Audio Return Channel. This arrangement worked almost as seamlessly. Consider a ‘hot’ symbol on the top of the amplifier. And there is a reason for this. This thing gets very warm even at the least output. It is important to be careful when it gets toasty. Sony specs the STR-DH190 for 6 ohms speaker load or higher. They have done this to pass UL certification with respect to the heat generated.

Sony STR-DH190 - Pros & Cons

Just remember to do your research into speakers, it is very important not to skimp this part. The same applies to your sources, you will really notice the difference when you use high resolution sources when compared to something like bluetooth or even Spotify's 320Kbps level of sound quality. Just don't expect too much from the receiver if your speakers and sources are below par, that's if you care about sound quality! It's important for electrical safety and for sound quality to have good speaker wire connections that are tight and don't work themselves loose.

Rigid parts hold the heat sink in place, reducing transmitted vibration from speaker sound pressure.AppleTV 4K can pass thru Dolby 5.1 with Atmos as E-AC3 (meaning, the receiver will recognize and display the sound stream as Atmos), however, it cannot pass thru Dolby TrueHD7.1 with Atmos or any form of DTS or DTS-X to the receiver. Anything higher than Dolby5.1 is passed to the receiver as LCPM lossless capped at 7.1 channels with no height channel or object-based sound encoding. A/B speaker function: The STRDH190 is equipped with an A/B speaker connection function for flexible speaker installations. With this function, you can use two sets of speakers (4 speakers) as front speakers to enjoy music in the main listening area. Alternatively, you can decide to run your speakers in separate locations and listen to the same audio or play different music for each zone. You can connect up to 4 speakers on the receiver. It uses automatic Class A/B switching, which lets you play them all at once, or separately. There are four HDMI inputs, all supporting all the good stuff you’d expect. According to the specs (Sony rarely skimps on specifications) they support up to 4K and UHD at up to 60Hz, HDR10, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dolby Vision, 3D, Deep Colour, the BT.2020 colour space, and the all-important HDCP 2.2 copy protection system. There’s a single HDMI output.

I was on the look out for an amplifier with built in phono inputs as I had started to build up a sound system for my living room. I also wanted to start off on a low budget and improve things in the future. At this price, you cannot expect a full display and microprocessors to drive it. But Sony has included one in this; perhaps because of the AVR function, it comes with. The radio and phono stage brings in the best of both worlds. I saw the button named ‘pure direct,’ which I still don’t understand its role. It only switched off the display more rather than doing anything else. My annoyance was connecting an iPhone or iPad to the old stereo which I did with lightning to 3.5 mm wired connection. This of course meant someone's phone or an iPad had to be sitting inside by the stereo - which was a pain, especially when batteries were running low. The old stereo also had lots of buttons and plenty of confusion when anybody but me was using it. It was a pain and generally a sorry setup. Despite its relatively low price point, the stereo receiver has an incredibly clean output. The speakers I’m using are basically bottom-of-the-barrel; the fact that this receiver can make them sound dynamic and lush verges on miraculous. There’s even a setting called “pure effect” that shuts down all necessary lights on the stereo to provide a clearer listening experience. When Dolby & DTS encoded sound streams are detected**, automatically upscales to drive all channels including height. I bought this Marantz amp with the matching Marantz CD player. I am running 2x 100wpc Pro Sound speakers and a massive Q Acoustics twin cone subwoofer. The sound through the amp from my Acoustic Solutions turntable and the CD player is AWESOME. I have the set up in my summerhouse down at the bottom of the garden and at anything approaching half volume it feels like I am rattling the nails out of my roof shingles - exactly what I wanted! I do like a bassy sound to my music.Low profile design: The Sony STRDH190 stands 5 ¼ inches tall, making it easy to fit in slender AV cabinets. It is an excellent choice for use in spaces that conventional stereo receivers can’t fit. On top of this, the unit comes with a rigid and reinforced chassis designed to enhance sound and reduce vibrations. As for music, again the results were very strong so long as I remained within the capabilities of the receiver and used speakers suited to it. And switched the sound of stereo music to ‘Stereo’ or ‘Direct’ or to ‘Pure Direct’, rather than the silly ‘All Channel Stereo’ default. There are four stereo RCA outputs. Many amps at this price range do not have such a number, which is pretty recommendable for Sony. This device is not only for analog functions. It comes with Bluetooth connectivity that lets you stream music wirelessly. Connect this any music service, podcast, or Bluetooth-enabled device, and you can enjoy remote functionality. With this feature, the Sony STRDH190 comes as a wonderful alternative to some of its predecessors.
