We love the Nanopresso, and Wacaco has done a ground-breaking espresso maker again with the Picopresso. The coffee this little device produces is simply beautiful, while the well-thought-out design and excellent accessories make using the machine a pleasure. Having an unpressurized basket means the Picopresso knows if you use bad quality coffee (think old, stale, pre-ground). And it will not forgive you. Add boiling water again to the water tank. (Note: If you scald yourself, I have no mercy. You were warned.)

It uses a pressurized basket that ensures that you’ll get decent espresso regardless of your grind size. The Picopresso really is a portable coffee maker, measuring just 4.17 x 3.07 x 2.8 inches / 10.6 x 7.8 x 7.1cm (h x w x d) and weighing 0.77lb / 350g. As such, it’s no chore to slip this into your bag each day. It’s smaller and more compact than Wacaco’s previous hand-pump espresso maker, the Nanopresso. Ultimately, the choice between the two likely comes down to your barista skills, whether you also want to make Nespresso, and whether you have a decent espresso grinder and require the best possible espresso on the go. Thanks to the ability to use the portafilter naked, where the spout is removed so the bottom of the basket is exposed, the coffee also had a complete crema on top. When we added sugar and gave the drink a stir, the crema formed again, which is exactly as we’d hoped.The espresso machine weighs as little as 350 g and features a naked portafilter, so you can see delicious, creamy espresso flowing directly from the standard 52-mm, 18-gram stainless-steel filter basket.
