About this deal

When I turned the gimbal for the first time, the stabilization was smoooooth and refined. The defaults are a “just right” setting that gives you the feeling you are guiding the camera where you want it to go, totally intuitively and without any sense of lag. You can “float” your way through any walkable space with this stabilizer and get a great result. I found the iSteady X handles more predictably than other stabilizers, without the annoying drift I’ve experienced with some (many) others I have tried. And with the Hohem Pro app you can fine-tune all the parameters needed to customize the gimbal to your specific needs.

The iSteady X has an 8-hour battery life. The 18650 li-ion 2000mAh/3.7v battery doesn’t last as long as the DJI OM4 or Zhiyun Smooth Q2 but is still plenty for most users. One design feature that is well worth noting is the gimbal design is a little unusual. The 3-axis are mounted with a design that leaves plenty of space for the lenses to be used to full effect. As gimbal technology nears its limit, making everything smaller seems to be the current trend. Hohem certainly isn’t the first in this respect. DJI introduced the first folding gimbal with the Osmo Mobile 3, and Zhiyun gave us the smallest 3-axis gimbal we’ve seen with the Smooth Q2.

Without the filter attached, it balances just fine, even with such a large phone. I can even keep my 17-52mm thread adapter attached so I don’t lose it. There are some filters and pre-programed gimbal movements too, the most vaunted of which is the ‘inception effect’ but the smooth pan might be more useful. Since it doesn’t complicate the app (they’re well organized), it’s hard to complain about more features. Activation seems to have become the norm with all new gimbals these days (and not just smartphone gimbals). It’s done through the Hohem Pro smartphone app ( iOS/ Android) which accompanies the gimbal. Until you activate the gimbal, the motors won’t even fire up, so it’s a mandatory part of the process. One issue with other mobile gimbals is that the gimbal can appear in the footage when switching to the wide-angle lenses. Here Hohem has ensured that even when switched to wide the footage is nice and clear. The iSteady X (below) is much more compact than an average-sized smartphone gimbal (above) Stabilization Performance

Inception mode isn’t quite as full-featured as we’ve seen in larger gimbals, but that’s to be expected on a folding smartphone gimbal. They’re not designed to spin a full 360° in all three axes, but they do have a pretty decent amount of rotation to let you shoot a short inception clip. As I said, this isn’t an uncommon issue and I faced the same issue with my ASUS ZenFone 5 and ASUS ZenFone 4. And this problem occurred whether or not my phone was in a case – although they’re usually in a case. Using the gimbal just as dumb pan/follow gimbal device worked well – but this isn’t much of a struggle for gimbals these days. iSteady X marrying compact design with powerful 3.0 algorithm, which is the ultimate choice to be an everyday carry gear. Zooming via the little slider on the side of the gimbal (which can also be switched to focus rather than zoom) worked well – although, with this phone, it is just digital zoom, so shoot 4K for best results. However, most of the oddities can be worked around, and real showstopper is the app that enables full integration between the camera phone and gimbal.

If, on the other hand, you’re more of a vlogger and you’re using the selfie camera a lot, or you’re more of a serious “smartphone filmmaker” who wants to be able to use 3rd party lenses with your phone, then there may be better options out there. If you’re just using your standard camera app rather than the Hohem Pro app, the button on the left won’t switch between modes. Instead, it will either shoot a photo if whatever app you’re using is in photo mode or it will start/stop recording if it’s in video mode. It's normal of the gimbal, the motors work to balance the smartphone based on its weight. It is recommended to power off the gimbal if it already works for hours. At present, countless mobile gimbal stabilisers will do this, so to stand out, Hohem the manufacture of the iSteady X has had to do something unique. That added extra is the unique gimbal design that enables ultra-wide mobile lenses to be used alongside standard ones. This negates a common problem with gimbal arms often appearing on the edge of wide-angled footage. Overall the app doesn’t haven’t the polish and refined user experience of the DJI Mimo app, but it’s on par and in some cases better than other gimbal apps. iSteady X vs iSteady Mobile Plus If you’re a casual user or someone looking to buy their first phone gimbal, the iSteady X is an excellent choice. It does a fine job of producing silky smooth videos and the app’s various shooting modes means you’re equipped for every situation.
