Ennui recurs and the former triangle moves through a transition successively into a pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, and decagon. For the first few shapes, the book outlines places you find these shapes in nature and human-made objects. A connection is also made as to whether those shapes provide juicy stories to tell friends. The video could be stopped at various points and children could be asked to find triangles in the picture. Investigate more calendar fractions by dividing the year into terms, seasons, number of lunar cycles etc. Talk about places in the world where the year is divided into halves: wet and dry seasons. On the first day of the new year a penguin arrives at a home in France. He's followed by another, and another, and another, until the house is overflowing with penguins. As the two children in the family struggle to care for the ever increasing brood, Dad tries to organize them mathematically, and mom tries to solve the puzzle of the mysterious penguin perpetrator. At the end of the year, their ecologist uncle turns up to explain his elaborate and expensive plan to rescue the penguins from global warming. He's then off to the arctic to save the polar bears...

The storyline is nonsensical. A delivery man brought one parcel each day (with a new penguin) to a family of 4. It all began on the New Year's Day, and the penguin didn't stop coming until the last day of the year. The book knows its far-fetched, but it was still my least favorite part of the book. The ecological message is weak at best and probably undermined by the rest of the book (the penguins being in an unideal environment, etc.).
