About this deal

Sometimes a new novel is accompanied by so much advance praise it seems like a sure winner. So it can feel disconcerting to discover that after actually reading the book it hasn't worked for me. Jhumpa Lahiri states that Sandro Veronesi (winner of multiple literary prizes in his native Italy) is “long considered one of Italy's leading writers” and that “his latest novel 'The Hummingbird'... has already been hailed as a classic.” High praise for this book also comes from Ian McEwan, Howard Jacobson, Michael Cunningham, Richard Ford, Edward Carey and Edward Docx. It's described as a “reinvention of the family saga” and generally I really fall for multigenerational stories. So all the elements were in place for me to fall in love with this book, but I didn't. This naturally makes me wonder if I'm missing something or if my expectations were set too high. But generally I've found that no amount of overarching high praise will spoil my enjoyment of a book if it's actually good and “The Hummingbird” is a novel that I keep finding faults with the more I think about it. Gentle, loving David, promising her a happiness she'd lost hope of finding, was all a lady could wish for.

The “hero” turns out to be a shoe salesman who is every bit the gentleman that Abigail is a lady. And soon, 33-year-old Abigail is dreaming that she may have a suitor to make up for the one she lost 13 years earlier. David Melcher, whose wound turns out to be only a big toe shot off, is quite enamored with Miss Abigail, but most of her time is taken up with the “robber” who is gravely wounded in his upper leg. Through a series of events, Abigail saves his life and yet when he awakens, he’s like a bear coming out of a cave, snapping at her every move. The recurrence of the hummingbird, a carved figure given as gift to Deborah and also painted on the bottom of a stoneware bowl owned by the professor emanate the hope that as a reader I was desperately seeking in the life and death circumstances of this novel . Definitely recommended. And yes, to a point. Usually, I go into books written in this time period with certain expectations. When those scenes occur, I read them, uncomfortable, but knowing it’s a stage the romance genre went through to get to where we are today.I salti temporali sono stordenti.

Classic Fairy Tales

He's author of THE HUMMINGBIRD, about a hospice nurse whose husband has returned from his 3rd deployment in Iraq with PTSD, and she is determined to help him heal. It is a story about loyalty, patience, and fierce love. I loved all the relationships shown - each of them brought a little something special and new into Olive's heart and displayed a beautiful dynamic that resonated with each scene they shared. Her stepbrother, Hatch Malone, stole my heart with his screen-time and all I wanted to do was envelop him in a warm hug. The love of family and power of friendship of the BlumeBird Society was prevalent throughout -each character breathed to life and soared with their conviction and care for Olive. The Hook Author Stephen P. Kiernan was a speaker at Booktopia 2016 sponsored by Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont. Though Kiernan was promoting this, The Hummingbird, his latest book, it was when he spoke about end of life issues, both of the living and the dying, that I knew I had to read his books.

This book has been languishing on my TBR since 2015. Thankfully a new book club I just joined had selected it for their December read. I love reading middle grade novels. As a reading teacher, I make it a practice to read through the Sequoyah reading list. One of the reasons I love doing this is because it exposes me to a large variety of literature, and keeps me from reading from the same diet of books. This superbly illustrated and informative book will appeal not only to birding enthusiasts, but also to anyone with a passing interest in nature."—Frank Lambert, Frank Lambert Birding Po dlhom čase som našla knihu mužského autora, ktorá mi naozaj sadla.

I don’t remember how I came to be interested in this novel, apart from the fact that I am in the look-out for contemporary Italian fiction. This was the Strega prize in 2020. Veronesi is a Florentine architect, and this is not the first time he gets the prestigious Strega. The previous one, for his Caos calmo, he received several years ago. I may give it a chance.
