[6] Early life [ edit ] The ADC Theatre, home of Footlights Ayoade on Ayoade' is a playful, funny parody of those earnest books which fawn over auteurs and deconstruct their work for meta levels of meaning. That Richard Ayoade is so willing to poke fun at this, whilst apparently engaging with it in his own films, made me like him even more - and I already like him a lot. Macleod, Duncan (9 July 2013). According to The Sun, he was a "leading candidate" to replace hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc at one point. Can you picture him presiding over proceedings in the Baking Show's famous tent? It’s like a dream from which you wake, only to realise you were dreaming that you were dreaming. Which is why the choice of ‘Time After Time’ is so perfect. It gently speaks, and often squawks, of the cyclical nature of all narrative. When you hear the song, you feel you’ve heard it before, and you have. Because the story’s an old one: a lover leaves, leaving nothing behind but generalities.”The book itself is a parody of high-brow interviews with film directors. It probably helps if you've taken a film studies class or two in college, as the satire of this writing style is pretty spot on. Ayoade's interviews are totally ridiculous, however, and this is not a book to read if you want to learn anything purely factual about him. The constant absurdism does raise the question of whether there's anything true in the book, even on a metaphorical level. I think the answer is yes. Of course his ramblings and in depth analogies of the scenes were what kept the book together, kept it funny and kept me going, although sometimes, being as wordy as it was, it was hard to follow sometimes. I was expecting something more like a memoir but Ayoade really sounds like a high class film reviewer as he discusses certain dialogue or scenes, or at least he would if he wasn't subvertently and completely taking the piss out of it. Ayoade isn't a fan of the documentary, though, telling The Guardian in 2014: “It was literally one of the things that made me not want to do interviews again. You have to imagine: a bunch of 21-year-olds, never-been-out-of-the-house type people. Our tour manager is another 21-year-old saying, ‘This is very important publicity, Anglia television want to do a feature.’ It was awful." I realize that's a lot of text to reproduce in a Goodreads review, but I'm impressed by how spot on this parody is! have loved all of Richard Ayoade's books, but this, his third, is by far my favourite. It's the critical analysis I wouldn't have considered necessary, but it was thrilling to listen to it! I'll link the clip that sold me on the book at the end of the review.
