About this deal

Then, after going over her method and steps and how to address different types of household spaces, she went over how to deal with other's clutter. At first glance it seems wildy inefficient to take out of place items to their final place right in the middle of things. So you watch your friends and wonder how in the world they're NOT stressed out and confused like you are?

The simple instructions and solutions for achieving and maintaining a manageable home are explained in "bite sized" chapters that inspire you to implement the strategies explained without feeling overwhelmed. This is a good decluttering book, though doesn't rise quite to the level some other decluttering books have, that I've read.

Of course I’m not the type to ask for help, but if somebody’s willing to give me advice in the form of an audiobook, woo hoo! You do what you can with the time you have, and as long as you are getting stuff out of your house, you are making progress.I read an ARC of this book through Net Galley, and while I did like it a lot, there are two reasons I didn't give it higher marks. Especially as someone that is known amongst her friends for knowing a lot about decluttering and minimalism. She also has you ask yourself a practical question: if I was looking for this, where would I look first?

I didn’t necessarily learn a ton of new things, but the reminders are good and she has classic ideas like clutter threshold and the container concept. There is also practical decluttering advice that can be applied to helping older family members, kids or even friends declutter. However, I put this on hold last August, so when you wait that long for a book to come through on the Libby app…. It went room by room following the same basic approach and considered each room’s unique challenges.

It means that you have a box of garbage (easy, just throw away), a box to donate (easy, just take away), and that the area you were decluttering has fewer things in it. It did not only give you tricks and hacks on how to declutter your space, it helps you change your mindset on how you think about clutter and stuff. I saw people online mention they liked having it on when they are cleaning or going through the steps in the book. Her “formula” for decluttering acknowledges that you don’t always have a lot of time, interruptions happen, and it can be really discouraging when things initially look worse as you try to declutter.

My goal for 2023 is to avoid most self help and non-fiction so that I don’t end up with a year like 2022 where I could barely pick 10 favourite books out of the >100 that I read. And that totally logical thinking was how I ended up in a place where I couldn’t function in my own home. However, the pertinent ones that take you on a decluttering journey of your house are definitely worth a shot - for me anyway.
