About this deal

In the 20th century, Bedford Street became a centre for the fashion industry, with a number of designer stores and boutiqes. It was also home to a number of art galleries and museums, and was a popular destination for those looking for a cultural experience. In the 19th century, the street became a hub of entertainment and culture, with many theatres, music halls and bars opening up. The street was also home to many immigrants from Poland, who had fled their home country during World War. This influx of immigrants gave the street its current name. Belfast, author Paul Larmour explains, is a “comparatively young city” with “no ancient castle or cathedral at its heart”. Wishing to advance beyond its status as a relatively unremarkable town, from the 1780s to the 1820s Belfast improved its harbour, established iron founding and shipbuilding (for which it was to be known for forever), and founded banks, educational institutions, and societies of an intellectual nature. This public spirit by the people of Belfast earned it the name of ‘Athens of the North’. It was granted city status by Royal charter in 1888. Royal Ave was also known for its jewellers and watchmakers’ shops. Wightman’s Jewellers, situated in Dublin Buildings, No 22 Royal Ave produced a wide variety of artistic gold and silver pieces bearing national emblems, said to rival the work of European craftsmen. He is also said to be the first silversmith to incorporate Connemara marble in his work.
