About this deal

Do you think the failure of Emily and Drew’s marriage is due to innate incompatibilities or life circumstances? I played journalist Marie Colvin in A Private War, who was an amazingly complicated figure to put on screen. Claire believes her father died and the pair are close and happy until a cancer diagnosis blows their world apart. There's something thrilling about being privy to a character's innermost secrets, their confessions and their selfish desires.

My feelings about the story didn’t change, but that’s a subjective measure, objectively I can say that the premise is intriguing, the characters are well drawn and the writing is above reproach. But when she is diagnosed with breast cancer she is forced to start addressing her past, a life she hasn’t told Claire or anyone about, a New York life, Emily’s life; a mess of a failed marriage, an affair and an accidental pregnancy that saw Emily fake her death post-9/11 and run away to LA. When I have lunch with my FBI friends, it’s always a merry-go-round where you sit because nobody wants their back to the door [ laughs].

I wasn’t writing much more than my thoughts back in 2016 when I read this, but this review was recently “discovered” and seems to be hitting some feeds now. Since Emily worked in the World Trade Center, everyone thought she had died, too, and she lets them believe that lie. He didn’t respond, just nodded and navigated his way to the Henry Hudson Parkway, my road out of everything. The very things Emily loved about Drew – his caring nature and commitment to family – are the things that eventually pull them apart and they find themselves separated by circumstance. Throughout this very readable debut novel, Hooper keeps up the tension and the pacing, teasing the reader as she reveals more and more details about Emily/Connie’s life before her decision to disappear, leaving friends and family to believe that she died when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11.Sharon Horgan (Executive Producer at Merman) says: “It has been so great to bring Kim Hooper’s emotionally and morally complex novel to life via a drama podcast. You know how with some stories, you’re antsy to get back to the past or the present because the author can’t make one story as good as the other? Fate determines that Drew continue in culinary school while Emily enters the workforce and it’s not long before cracks start to appear in the relationship. Parkinson's is another co-star, and the characters' experience with that has me now fearing Parkinson's more than I ever have the C Word. Hooper says in her dedication, "This book is for all those people -- cowardly and courageous -- who dare to imagine leaving it all behind.
