About this deal

This series includes the 1-channel iRig PRO and the 2-channel iRig PRO DUO. Both are battery powered and support an optional power supply that also charges iOS devices, and they feature up to 24-bit/96kHz for professional-standard recording. Combo inputs accommodate mic-, line-, and instrument-level signals, and the preamps include switchable phantom power for condenser microphones. On top of that, iRig PRO series interfaces provide MIDI I/O, making them among the least expensive and most versatile iOS interfaces on the market. For this tutorial I'll show you how to easily record your acoustic guitar into GarageBand, without the need for a complex software suite and without having to worry about most of the issues we previously mentioned. This workaround is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Our roundup of Thunderbolt audio interfaces could be helpful for someone wanting to upgrade to an interface faster than a USB connection. Patented system works with any acoustic or acoustic-electric guitar providing an exceptionally true acoustic tone

Our most recent article on running an Electric guitar through GarageBand covers the details of getting a USB audio interface to communicate with your Mac. The acoustic properties of the microphone then depends on the mechanic properties of the cantilever (mass, elasticity) exactly like a microphone diaphragm. In the comparison, I hooked up the clip-on microphone on the iRig Acoustic Stage to the sound port on my Washburn 10WD SCE Acoustic Guitar and ran it into an instrument input on my Presonus Firestudio audio interface. I then plugged the guitar output on my acoustic guitar into another open input on the interface. And finally, I mic’ed the guitar up with a Rode Nt1a condenser microphone at roughly the 12th fret. In the “take no prisoners” world of open mics, songwriter rounds and blazing fast stage turnovers you’d best be prepared to hand the sound tech one single input that’s “good to go” (with a little signal processing beyond an instrument’s raw sound) if you expect to get a good mix going in your one song (or micro set). Why stop with audio-related products when there are so many great virtual instrument apps out there — including IK Multimedia’s own SampleTank, Syntronik, and various piano apps? To answer this, IK Multimedia introduced several iRig Keys keyboard controller models. The original iRig Keys gives mobile songwriters and players a simple, lightweight keyboard, while the expanded iRig Keys Pro adds the mod and pitch wheels that are essential to keyboardists. Going even further, iRig Keys I/O models borrow additional triggers from the iRig Pads pad controller while adding single-channel audio interface (including a preamp with phantom power) to the mix. All iRig Keys models are fully cross-platform compatible and include killer virtual instruments. The IK Multimedia iRig Acoustic Stage is a highly portable preamp/DSP unit that features a handy clip on the rear panel so you can perform while controlling your iRig Acoustic Stage. The main layout of the preamp/DSP unit provides you with up to 6 different tones, with four main tones included on the main panel. The tones include: Natural, Warm, Bright and Nylon, perfect for bringing the most out of your acoustic guitar.

When most music industry companies were first contemplating the possibility of making music with iOS, IK Multimedia was already hard at work, producing the first generation of mobile-ready gear and specialty apps that would prove it could be done. As of early 2010, the original iRig and AmpliTube app revolutionized the way guitarists interacted with iOS, almost single-handedly ending the market for standalone guitar practice tools. In the years that followed, IK Multimedia steadily expanded the iRig line, introducing microphones, interfaces, keyboards, and more. Today, there’s a whole iRig ecosystem, providing gear that makes mobile music production easier than ever. Record, Produce, and Perform IK Multimedia iRig Acoustic Stage is a complete bundled set containing a microphone, preamp and audio interface for recording and amplifying acoustic guitars. Compact Contents Battery Life: approximatively 12 hours of continuous usage with alkaline batteries and 15 hours with rechargeable high quality Ni-MH AA cells (2000 mAh and up)Note: Do NOT enable the 'Hardware Buffer' under Options in the ASIO4ALL panel, as this causes poor performance.

In brief you have more surface in all the leaves of a tree than on a carpet of the size of the same tree. That's why the tree are that way... to capture the most light. MEMS are made with the same idea. Please follow these steps to setup your device on Windows. Please note that there are interfaces that may not work properly with the below steps: That’s all there is to it really. Then, power on the unit, set the volume level using the volume knob, and you’re ready to go. As you can see from the graphic, there a number of different ways to position a microphone for this process. And it's probably fair to say that the most optimal way to mic an acoustic guitar would be similar to how we mic a drum set. For a truly professional level of recording, you'd want at least three microphones positioned the following ways: All of the above make for a very useful live-sound device, but there are studio-centric features as well … like the class-compliant (as in plug ’n play simplicity) USB connection for self-recording. There are even modeling apps available from IKM on-line that further the flexibility and creative voicings.

iRig Recording Interfaces

I suspect iRig will be known to a few of my readers as the people behind the digital interface for connecting an audio output from a ukulele (or guitar) and plugging it into a tablet or smartphone for recording in an app. It's produced by IK Multimedia, an Italian based company that make a wide range of music production and recording gizmos. For other issues and information about recording an acoustic guitar on GarageBand, setting up the iRig Acoustic Stage or working with your own USB interface, the following resources could be helpful. Though components found in almost all products can be found somewhere on the cheap or approximated in some capacity via DIY, and as stated above "connected to an Arduino", there's a lot more going on with iRig Acoustic Stage than a simple microphone connected to a simple audio circuit. This will create a similar resonance to what you're hearing from most acoustic guitar preamps, which are usually positioned near the left or right of the soundhole. It'll also capture the most complete sound from your acoustic guitar that is possible from a mic at a single location. IK Multimedia recommends the Acoustic Stage MEMS microphone be placed at the bottom (pictured below).

As a result IK multimedia is able to offer the IRig with a very competitive price and a lot of features. The difficult thing about recording guitars at home, or even in a studio environment, is that there are a lot of different ways to do it, yet many of them are ambiguous, complicated and never seem to provide a straight path forward. The unit is powered on by a simple “on/off” switch on the side. A “tone” button exists to change the guitar sound from natural, warm, and bright. It also features an option for nylon stringed guitars. It's a small MEMS accelerometer IC that tells the tablet when it is hold in "portrait" or "landscape" position. The same accelereometer will sens vibration if you shake it... as for example in the Nintendo Nunchuk when paying Raving Rabbids... And the same can be used in Irig to sens the vibration of a guitar top. Finally, the section that you’re probably most interested in, how does iRig Acoustic Stage sound (particularly in comparison ot traditional methods of amplifying/recording your acoustic guitar)? As for the sound, well it really is rather nice. Before the audiophiles chip in and point out that a MEMS microphone will never beat a high end condenser or ribbon mic, no, of course it won't. It's not one of those things and it's not trying to be. But it is still remarkably clean, open, natural and airy for such a small device. Certainly far FAR more natural sounding than a piezo option. In fact, I would suspect that if you played to someone blindfold that most would not be able to tell you were not playing into a regular microphone. You’ve already got an acoustic you love and now you can easily add a high performance clip on microphone with a dedicated preamp.
