About this deal

The only reason I'd recommend someone to buy this remaster is to show Bamco that you care about the Tales Of series being on Nintendo platforms. I think I'm about done with the franchise, though. I have the Vesperia remaster and I'm satisfied with that, even if Yuri suddenly changes voices in certain scenes… That all said, this version does have the bonus content from the PS2 and PS3 versions, so there's that. Lloyd must face his fears and his feelings for Colette, even as she gradually loses her humanity with every step she takes toward her angelic destiny…

Although most combat encounters are relatively slow and straightforward, boss fights are a highlight. These demand a thoughtful party composition, clever tactics, and smart item management. Even on the normal difficulty level, players might find it difficult to coast through boss encounters like they would regular ones. While the fundamentals still feel a little clunky, the increased challenge makes boss fights considerably more engaging. This will be the first time it is on PS4, Xbox one, Xbox Series X|S and the Nintendo Switch. While they are the second newest generation of consoles, outside of the Switch, there is a likelihood that this game will eventually make its way to the PS5. This could be even as soon as next year which is evident from what the game has done in the past.

For skills, the most important element of building your party is the EX Gem system, which affects the kind of artes characters can learn along with passive skills. You get EX Gems by beating bosses and thoroughly exploring dungeons, and each one will grant you little buffs to things like accuracy or strength. Each character can have up to four equipped, and depending on the combination of gems you use, you’ll get unique effects like being able to guard mid-air or automatically recovering from status effects. We enjoyed the focus here on experimentation, as there are a lot of different skills you can discover by trying different combinations. Tales of Symphonia was a formative experience for me. For my young 11-year-old brain, it redefined my understanding of the JRPG genre. The vibrant presentation, action-focused combat, and mature story took me by surprise. Weekend after weekend, a friend and I would explore the world of Sylvarant together, making incremental progress in each play session. While I had played a few JRPGs before, none had hooked me the way Tales of Symphonia had.

This game was one of the early JRPGs that really made a name for themselves in the West. While many were being made, only some of them grabbed the attention of fans outside of Japan. Along with the likes of the Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem games, Tales of Symphonia boasted a robust story and memorable characters. I heard from GVG that it's riddled with bugs and downgrades from the GameCube version. That may be because it's based ultimately on the PS2 version (the NGC version was lost after the Sony enhanced port came out).
