About this deal

As always this book will prove to be an invaluable asset to not only trainee teachers, but as many have agreed also after school experience placements. This book provides practice questions that develop the core skills for success in non-verbal reasoning. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching.

I have found this book to be interesting but not necessarily the most helpful to figure out certain methods. This giant workbook is packed with fun activities to help children practise their English and Maths skills. It is clear that this book is written by a teacher for teachers and its main objective is to ensure teachers understand the concepts behind what that they teach so that children will not just learn mathematics but understand mathematics.

Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations. As well as his publications in the field of education, he has written seven books of Christian drama for young people and a Christmas musical (published by Church House/National Society).

Ralph led the mathematics and physical education programmes for the Primary PGCE at the University of East Anglia until 2013.

This is a fantastic resource for primary teachers as it explains the links and connections in maths and suggests the clearest way to teach concepts to children.

QUESTIONS AND QUIZZES: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes. Develop their problem solving by apply mathematical skills to real-life situations and through mathematical puzzles, problems and investigations. LEARNING AND TEACHING POINTS: Feel confident in the classroom with these key points to remember when planning and teaching. There are also simple exercises you can complete yourself to test your knowledge after reading each section. This edition tackles written calculation algorithms with clarity and detail; the emphasis on children understanding these processes and how to support this is maintained throughout.I particularly found the chapter on mental strategies useful for explaining how the laws of multiplication and division work and for encouraging ad hoc approaches to multiplication.

His other specific interests are in developing children’s higher thinking skills, assessment for learning and planning for teaching effectively. Tried and tested, the fifth edition of Derek Haylock’s much loved textbook matches the 2014 curriculum requirements for England.

Learning and Teaching points highlight important issues you may face in the classroom and provide practical guidance for teaching. There are good illustrations on the use of physical representations to support addition and subtraction with very clear guidance on how to use base ten materials and coins.
