The essays all have different, distinct voices; but they're personal, conversational and easily laid out in accessible sections. Some of them felt linear and structured, some strings of thoughts - but all of them invoked a deep sense of companionship and a shared understanding. During the pregnancy he would not, out of principle, take the rubbish out, so while I was 7 months pregnant we had a maggot infestation in the kitchen, and I had to clean it all by myself and take the heavy rubbish bins out. I was gagging the whole time. If I wasn't heavily pregnant, I would've left him that day. Heartbreaking, horrific and eye-opening… Please read this book, it may help you to understand a little about one other person you know’ -

5. Let Me Know if This Works for You

The hospital doctor job became a specialism in psychiatry; Joanna’s first non-fiction book, Breaking and Mending (2019), told the story of her time as a junior doctor and her latest collection, Will You Read This, Please ? ( released May 2023) contains twelve powerful stories as told to some of the UK’s finest writers. It works best when dealing with sensitive information or information that needs someone’s attention. HarperCollins’ decision as to who will be included in the collection shall be final, and no further correspondence shall be entered into. Please respond” is best for bosses because it shows you have authority over someone. It commands them to “respond,” even if they don’t want to.

Joanna Cannon has written a number of successful books, both fictional and non-fictional. These include, A Tidy Ending (which I LOVED), Three Things About Elsie and The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, as well as medical memoir, Breaking & Mending. If I'm being brutally honest here, I am more of a fan of her non-fiction than her fiction. That's not to say I dislike the fiction, not at all, but there's something that emanates from her non-fiction writing that is very special. Please confirm upon receipt. The sooner you agree, the better this will be. We do not have time to waste. Kindly respond as soon as you can” shows that you expect a response when someone is able to give you one. “Kindly” reinforces the politeness of the phrase while also demanding that someone “responds” as soon as they get the chance. Entrants must at some point have experienced a mental health condition, and, if chosen, will need to provide a letter from their primary carer or GP certifying that they are currently suitable to participate in the project. Edited by Joanna Cannon, the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep , Three Things About Elsie and A Tidy Ending , the stories told here are powerful, resonant and heart-breaking. This is a ground-breaking and unforgettable collection, shining a light on the stigma and isolation of living with mental illness, while also showing the strength and resilience of the human spirit.Neither HarperCollins nor The Borough Press will be able to return any submissions, so please make sure you have a copy stored safely before you submit. XXXXXXX has made me feel so insignificant and bad about myself I can only put it into the emotional abuse category. To give you some raw examples, when I was breastfeeding he was asking me why I am doing it so much, why I have my breast out, why am I always with my 'tits' out every time he sees me.

What I liked about it, is it didn't just focus on the obvious depression and anxiety. Yes, they were in there, of course, as well as self-harm and suicidal tendencies. But some of these stories are more niche. We read about a man with a gambling addiction, a woman with a paralysing fear of vomiting, a man who is subjected to conversion therapy to rid him of his homosexuality, and an individual who has to hide their gender identity. I am ridden with anxiety and emotional panic because of the consistent need and effort on my end to prove my value to him over the past 5 years, senselessly. It shows that you would appreciate someone’s confirmation. It also suggests that you don’t mind waiting a little bit before they give it to you. In In the belly of the flask, they discuss not only sexuality and gender, but the overlooked link between our physical health and it's relationship to our mental safety - it's a difficult read, but it's a blinding statement that shows we need to treat the whole person, not just one symptom.

The Borough Press has acquired nonfiction collection Will You Read This, Please?, conceived and edited by Joanna Cannon, the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things About Elsie. Releasing this so close to Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK is brilliant, very few people seem to be aware that a diagnosis is just the start of your journey, not the ending of it by giving it a name, myself included as someone diagnosed with anxiety and depression. You don't beat it, it's like grief, it has a weight which therapy, good friends, supportive workplaces and if needed, medication, helps you bear it. Sometimes it takes you over. But what comes through each story here, each life swung wildly off course is that the stigma attached to living with a mental health condition is ever present. And this book goes a way towards contributing to an understanding for those with, and those without mental health conditions , those who support us and keep us going when that weight is dragging you down. This is our lives, written down, born witness to by writers who lend their shoulder to the wheel of bringing what was previously hidden and considered shameful into the sunshine. For here are tales of redemption and hope alongside grief and regret. Under no circumstances will HarperCollins be responsible for any loss, damages, costs or expenses arising from or in any way connected with any errors, defects, interruptions, or delays in the promotion, and HarperCollins Not to relate it their experiences, not to offer help, but to sit in a safe space, and quietly work through each of the cases and be present , take on board what is being said as well as what is becoming increasingly apparent-the mental and physical health services in the UK may be having the best of intentions in providing care at the point of need, however, this does not translate into individualised, person centred care. Suzie Dooré, Publishing Director of The Borough Press, signed world rights in the anthology in a deal with Sue Armstrong at C&W.
